These are our own photographs of the Madikwe Game Reserve, taken over many visits and sorted gallery by gallery — birds, cheetah, elephant, giraffe, lion, wild dog, zebra, scenery and the game drives themselves. Madikwe is a 75,000-hectare (750km²) malaria-free "Big 7" reserve on South Africa's Botswana border, and it has been an absolute privilege to explore it on numerous occasions whilst staying at many of the amazing lodges on offer. From its unparalleled landscapes to its abundant wildlife, every visit holds its own magic. Below, we've shared a selection of our favourite photographs, each reflecting the wonder and beauty of this stunning destination.
For those eager to dive into wildlife photography, we highly recommend a decent DSLR or mirrorless body paired with at least a 300mm lens for exceptional clarity and detail. A 200mm lens can work, but for the best results, a longer focal length is ideal. Trust us – the extra reach is worth it when photographing Madikwe's iconic scenes.

The Madikwe Game Reserve is a premier birdwatching destination, with around 350 species recorded in and around its borders. The reserve sits in the transition zone at the edge of the Kalahari basin, so a single morning's drive can turn up Highveld, Bushveld and arid-country specials together — raptors over the savannah, Crimson-breasted Shrike and Southern Pied Babbler in the acacia woodland.

Spotting a cheetah in the Madikwe Game Reserve is an exceptionally rare privilege, as the reserve holds only a small and closely managed population of these cats. On our most recent visit, we were incredibly fortunate not only to encounter them but to witness the breathtaking spectacle of a hunt. It was, without a doubt, one of the most thrilling wildlife sightings we have ever experienced.

The African elephant stands as a proud member of Africa's "Big 5", and in the Madikwe Game Reserve there is no shortage of them. Breeding herds were among the first animals brought in during Operation Phoenix, and they have thrived ever since. If you want to photograph these highly intelligent mammals at close range, Madikwe delivers.
Madikwe Giraffe Gallery
When it comes to spotting giraffe in the Madikwe bushveld, it should come as no surprise that these animals stand out like sore thumbs. An adult bull reaches up to 5.5 metres in height, so you can quite literally spot them a mile off — which makes them one of the more forgiving subjects for a first safari camera.

One of the many striking features of Madikwe is her vistas — bushveld, koppies and the Dwarsberg Mountains along the southern boundary — different to anything else South Africa has to offer.

When someone says that spotting a wild dog is a rare event, they truly mean it. African wild dogs survive in only about fourteen African countries, with viable populations in eight, and South Africa's national population is estimated at around 550 animals. So when the chance to see them comes around, grab it with both hands.

Madikwe Zebra Gallery
Only one zebra species occurs in the Madikwe Game Reserve: the plains zebra, represented here by the Burchell's subspecies. They are a staple prey animal for lion, leopard and wild dog, and cheetah will take younger ones — which means a zebra herd on open ground is often the first sign that something else is about to happen.

These photographs wonderfully encapsulate the quintessential Madikwe safari experience from the unique perspective of a game drive vehicle. They capture everything from the keen-eyed game spotters perched at the front, to the silhouettes of guides and fellow passengers, and even the shared awe on the faces of people in other vehicles, all observing the same magnificent wildlife.

What camera kit do you need for a Madikwe safari?
A DSLR or mirrorless body with a lens of at least 300mm is what we would take. A 200mm works, but the extra reach earns its place the moment a cheetah stops fifty metres off the track. Bring more memory cards than you think you need, and a beanbag for the vehicle rail.
Is a long lens essential, or will a phone do?
A phone handles the scenery, the sundowners and the camp beautifully. It will not reach the wildlife. Modern phone zoom is digital crop at heart, and a lion at any respectable distance comes out as a tan smudge. Carry both: the phone for the wide shots, the long lens for everything with fur.
When is the light best for photography in Madikwe?
The first and last hour of each game drive, which is precisely when the drives run. Winter mornings are crisp and clear with thin bush and long shadows; summer brings dramatic storm light and green backgrounds. Dust in the dry months does remarkable things to backlit sightings.
Can you photograph from the game drive vehicle?
Yes, and almost all of these photographs were taken from one. The animals here are accustomed to vehicles and largely ignore them, which lets you work far closer than you could on foot. Shoot from a seated position, brace against the rail, and wait for your guide to cut the engine.
