Madikwe Bird List
Madikwe Birdwatching — Where the Bushveld Meets the Kalahari
Madikwe Game Reserve has around 350 recorded bird species, from Common Ostrich, the world's largest bird, down to the waxbills and finches. Kori Bustard, the heaviest flying bird native to Africa, is resident, and Lilac-breasted Roller is on almost every drive. It is a substantial list for a reserve of 75,000 hectares.
What sets Madikwe apart is geography rather than sheer numbers. The reserve sits in the transition zone on the eastern edge of the Kalahari basin, so the birdlife has far more in common with the arid, sandy country to the west than with the rest of South Africa's Big 5 reserves. A single morning's drive can turn up Highveld, Bushveld and Kalahari species together. The specials worth coming for include Southern Pied Babbler, Ashy Tit, Barred Wren-Warbler, Kalahari Scrub Robin, Violet-eared Waxbill, Shaft-tailed Whydah, Great Sparrow and African Red-eyed Bulbul.
You do not need a game vehicle to start the list. A slow walk around the grounds at the lodges in Madikwe Game Reserve will usually produce Emerald-spotted Wood-Dove, Grey Go-away-bird, Southern Red-billed Hornbill and Crimson-breasted Shrike before breakfast, with Woodland Kingfisher calling from the camp trees through the summer months. Raptors are a particular strength: Martial Eagle, Bateleur, Brown and Black-chested Snake-Eagle, African Hawk-Eagle and Verreaux's Eagle all occur, along with Lappet-faced, White-backed and Cape Vulture.
For those with a serious interest in ornithology, we can build a tailor-made South Africa safari around the birding, with a private specialist guide who knows the calls, the behaviour and the nesting sites. We have been arranging exactly this since 1999. If mammals are the priority instead, our Madikwe mammal list covers the 66 large mammal species recorded here, and the Madikwe Game Reserve travel guide sets out access, seasons and how the reserve works.

Madikwe Bird List: Frequently Asked Questions
How many bird species are found in Madikwe Game Reserve?
Around 350 resident and migrant bird species have been recorded in and around Madikwe Game Reserve. That is a substantial list for a reserve of 75,000 hectares, and it reflects the unusual range of habitats packed into it, from open grassland and bushveld to rocky koppies and the riverine bush along the Marico.
Why is the birdlife in Madikwe different from other South African reserves?
Madikwe straddles a transition zone where bushveld meets Kalahari thornveld. A single morning's drive can therefore produce Highveld, Bushveld and arid-country species together, which is unusual in one reserve. Birders who have worked Kruger or the Lowveld regularly add new species to their life lists here.
Which birds will I realistically see on a Madikwe game drive?
Southern Pale Chanting Goshawk appears on almost every drive, perched on roadside trees. Lilac-breasted Roller, Crimson-breasted Shrike, Southern Red-billed and African Grey Hornbill, Marico Flycatcher, Grey Go-away-bird and Kori Bustard are all common. Southern Pied Babbler parties work the tracks, and Common Ostrich is resident.
Which Kalahari specials can I see in Madikwe?
The reserve's position on the eastern edge of the Kalahari basin brings in arid-country birds that most South African reserves cannot offer. Southern Pied Babbler, Ashy Tit, Barred Wren-Warbler, Kalahari Scrub Robin, Violet-eared Waxbill, Shaft-tailed Whydah, Great Sparrow and African Red-eyed Bulbul are all regular residents.
Is Madikwe good for raptors?
Exceptionally so. Martial Eagle, Bateleur, Brown and Black-chested Snake-Eagle, African Hawk-Eagle, Tawny Eagle, Wahlberg's Eagle and Verreaux's Eagle are all on the list, alongside Lappet-faced, White-backed and Cape Vulture. Migrant Steppe Eagle and Steppe Buzzard swell the numbers through summer.
When is the best time of year for birding in Madikwe?
November to March is the birding peak. Intra-African and Palearctic migrants arrive, resident males come into breeding plumage and male Shaft-tailed Whydahs trail their full tails. Winter, from May to September, offers fewer species but easier viewing through thinner bush and around the remaining water.
