Madikwe Game Reserve records 66 large mammal species, of which 23 are carnivores. The list runs from the "Big 7" — lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, black and white rhino, cheetah and African wild dog — all the way down to aardwolf, Temminck's pangolin and springhare. A further 26 snake species have been recorded in the reserve, for anyone inclined to look down as well as out.
For predator enthusiasts, Madikwe is exceptional. Twenty-three carnivore species is a remarkable figure for a South African reserve, and the reserve delivers them generously: wild dog packs that have grown thoroughly relaxed around vehicles, lion prides holding established territories, leopard on the rocky koppies, and civet, genet and aardwolf turning up in the spotlight on the drive home. The sightings are unhurried and the vehicles are few, which is precisely why Madikwe has such a reputation among photographers.
Madikwe is one of the very few reserves anywhere to hold both spotted hyena and brown hyena in the same habitat. Spotted hyena are seen regularly, often at dusk or lingering near a kill. Brown hyena are shyer, largely nocturnal and most often picked up after dark. Ticking off both in a single stay is one of the genuine wildlife distinctions this reserve offers, and one our guests remember long after the lion sightings blur together.
The reason for such a varied mammal list is geography. Madikwe sits in the transition zone on the edge of the Kalahari basin, where dry-country species overlap with bushveld species across open grassland, thornveld and rocky outcrops. That overlap is why a single morning's drive can turn up animals you would otherwise have to visit two separate regions to see — and it is exactly the same reason the Madikwe bird list runs to around 350 species.

So who is this list actually for? If you are a first-time safari visitor, it matters less than you might think — the Big 7 will find you, and a good guide will fill in the rest. Where this checklist earns its keep is on a second or third safari, when the novelty of lion has worn off and the interesting question becomes whether you can add brown hyena, aardvark or pangolin to a life list. Madikwe is one of the few malaria-free reserves in South Africa where those three are a realistic hope rather than a fantasy.
It also matters if you are choosing between reserves on wildlife alone. Sixty-six large mammals in 75,000 hectares, with no day visitors and a handful of lodges sharing the traversing, means high density and quiet sightings in the same place — a combination that is rarer than the brochures suggest.
