For anyone after a real African safari rather than a polished imitation of one, Zambia delivers in spades.
It is also a wonderfully welcoming place. Zambians are warm, hospitable and proud of their heritage, and that welcome shapes every trip. Then there are the landscapes: the open plains of the west, the great Luangwa Valley, the Zambezi escarpment and, at Livingstone, Victoria Falls — one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa and the largest curtain of falling water on earth.
The parks speak for themselves: Mosi-oa-Tunya, the Kafue, the Lower Zambezi, Kasanka, and North and South Luangwa. Between them they offer:

Zambia Travel FAQs
Do I need a visa to visit Zambia?
It depends on your passport. British travellers need no visa for tourist stays of up to 90 days in any 12-month period, but must show a return or onward ticket and enough money for the stay. Other nationalities should check current rules before booking. Every passport needs six months' validity beyond arrival and two blank pages.
What is the KAZA UniVisa?
The KAZA UniVisa is a single tourist visa that covers Zambia and Zimbabwe, plus day trips into Botswana. It costs US$50, is valid for 30 days, and is issued online or on arrival at the main airports and land borders. It suits travellers who need visas for both countries and want to see Victoria Falls from each side.
What currency is used in Zambia?
Zambia's currency is the kwacha (ZMW), and it is the currency for everyday spending. Bank of Zambia rules require most local transactions to be settled in kwacha, so carry some for tips, curios and meals in Livingstone or Lusaka. Your lodges, flights and activities are normally paid in advance as part of your safari, which keeps cash needs small.
Can I pay in US dollars in Zambia?
Only in some cases. Tourism businesses registered under Zambia's Tourism and Hospitality Act may accept foreign currency from non-resident visitors, but most other purchases must be settled in kwacha. Air departure taxes are normally built into your ticket; if not, they are payable in kwacha. A small float of local currency covers anything outside your lodge.
Is Zambia safe for tourists?
Travel in Zambia's main towns and national parks is generally safe during daylight hours, according to UK government travel advice. Take ordinary precautions: don't walk around towns after dark, use pre-arranged transport and steer clear of demonstrations. In unfenced camps the wildlife is the bigger consideration, so always follow your guide's instructions on foot and around camp.
How does Zambia compare with Zimbabwe and Botswana?
Zambia shares Victoria Falls with Zimbabwe, and its Lower Zambezi National Park faces Zimbabwe's Mana Pools across the river. Its own signatures are walking safaris in the Luangwa Valley, canoeing on the Zambezi and big wilderness parks such as the Kafue. Botswana meets Zambia across the Zambezi at Kazungula, the crossing towards Chobe.
