Madikwe Lodges Visited: Our Own Photographs and Honest Reviews
Madikwe Lodges Visited is our first-hand record of the safari lodges and camps we have stayed at inside the Madikwe Game Reserve, in South Africa's North West Province on the Botswana border. Every photograph on this page was taken by us. Every review is written from our own nights in the room, at the dinner table and on the game vehicle. Nothing here comes from a lodge's marketing pack, and nothing is reproduced from a supplier brochure.
The properties we have photographed and written up ourselves are Impodimo Game Lodge, Jaci's Safari Lodge, Jaci's Tree Lodge, Jamala Madikwe, Mateya Safari Lodge, Molori Safari Lodge, Motswiri Safari Lodge, Rhulani Safari Lodge and Tuningi Safari Lodge, along with Jaci's Terrapin Hide, one of the finest photographic hides anywhere in the reserve. Where a lodge does not appear here, we have not yet slept in it, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise.
Our approach has not changed since 1999: see the lodge for ourselves before recommending it to anyone. That means judging the things a brochure never shows you. How the rooms handle a cold July morning and a 38-degree afternoon. Whether the guiding is genuinely excellent or merely competent. How close that waterhole really is to the deck. How the kitchen copes with a dietary request at short notice, and what the place feels like when it is full rather than empty.
Madikwe makes this kind of comparison unusually fair. The reserve is malaria-free, closed to day visitors, and every lodge shares the same 75,000 hectares and much the same wildlife. No property can hide behind a better game area. What separates them is the guiding, the food, the rooms, the service and the welcome, and those are exactly the things we are in a position to judge.

Our absolute favourite lodge, not just within Madikwe Game Reserve but quite possibly in all of South Africa, is so exceptional it truly merits a detailed review. From the moment we arrived, we knew this place was different. It's undoubtedly one of the best and most memorable lodges we've ever experienced. In short, expect a truly magnificent wildlife experience, exceptional food, and spectacularly comfortable rooms. Most importantly, however, is the incredibly attentive service from the fantastic staff, which without a doubt, makes every moment unforgettable.
