Upstream, the river breaks into islands and side channels, and the stays grow smaller and wilder: tented camps inside Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, treehouse tents strung across two islands, and thatched chalets on a private island reached only by boat. Evenings belong to sundowners on the deck, with hippos grunting in the shallows and elephants wading between the islands.

Its houses and cottages face the river, and days follow your own pace rather than a fixed schedule. Tongabezi also runs the boat trips to Livingstone Island, on the very lip of Victoria Falls.
