They have rooms that keep everyone together, kitchens happy to serve an early supper, and guides who can turn a game drive or a morning on the river into a proper adventure for younger explorers.
Most sit on the Zambezi upstream of Victoria Falls, where you can fill the days with river cruises, the falls themselves and gentle wildlife outings. Beyond Livingstone there's an owner-run lodge on the Kafue River, a lodge on the Lower Zambezi facing Mana Pools across the water, and a camp on a ridge inside South Luangwa National Park.

Chundukwa River Lodge

On the banks of the Zambezi upstream of Victoria Falls, Chundukwa River Lodge is a small, relaxed riverside retreat with chalets on stilts over the water. Children can ride horses, meet the donkeys, sheep and geese on the farm and try their luck fishing on the river. Chundu Cottage, a private three-bedroom house, gives the whole family a place of its own.
David Livingstone Safari Lodge

On the Zambian bank of the Zambezi, a short drive upstream of Victoria Falls, David Livingstone Safari Lodge has inter-leading rooms that keep the family together. Its infinity pool looks straight out over the river and is perfect for cooling off between outings. River cruises, the falls and Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park are all close by.
Kaingu Lodge

Owner-run Kaingu Lodge sits on the Kafue River opposite Kafue National Park. Its Young Adventurers programme keeps children busy with tracking, archery, stargazing, bread making, African storytelling and drumming, and a visit to the local school. Finfoot, a separate house with two en-suite bedrooms, gives families room to spread out.
Puku Ridge Camp

Puku Ridge Camp sits on a ridge inside South Luangwa National Park, looking out over the Kakumbi floodplain. Tented suites come with private plunge pools and outdoor star beds. The camp is unfenced and wildlife wanders through, so it best suits families with older children ready for a proper Luangwa safari. There is no set children's programme.
Royal Chundu Zambezi River Lodge

On a private stretch of the Zambezi upstream of Victoria Falls, Royal Chundu runs the Chundu Children's Club. Each child starts with a treasure hunt and a River Safari Adventure Pack, then moves on to fishing, cooking lessons and stargazing with river guides or child minders. Royal Zambezi Lodge

Royal Zambezi Lodge sits in the Chiawa GMA just outside Lower Zambezi National Park, across the river from Mana Pools. Families can take a family suite or two adjoining suites with a shared lounge between them. Activities bend to suit children, from boule on a sandbar to fishing for bream instead of tigerfish, and the kitchen will serve early dinners in your suite.
Thorntree River Lodge

Thorntree River Lodge stands on the Zambezi inside Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, a short drive from Victoria Falls. Every suite has its own plunge pool, and two family suites link their bedrooms with an inter-leading passage. Babysitting is available on request, and there's a spa and a small gym for parents. Elephants and hippos walk through camp, so keep little ones close.
Toka Leya Camp

Toka Leya Camp sits on the Zambezi inside Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, upstream of Victoria Falls. Its family tents add a second bedroom at the back, and two or three times a week an African drumming band gets everyone playing along. River cruises, evening campfires and trips to the falls and a nearby village fill the days, and a riverside spa waits for the grown-ups.

Which Zambian lodges run a children's programme?
Royal Chundu and Kaingu Lodge both run dedicated children's programmes. Royal Chundu's Children's Club opens with a treasure hunt, then adds fishing, cooking lessons and stargazing, with river guides or child minders on hand. Can a family have a house to themselves?
Yes. Chundukwa River Lodge and Kaingu Lodge each have a separate family house. Chundu Cottage at Chundukwa is a private three-bedroom cottage on the Zambezi upstream of Victoria Falls, and Finfoot at Kaingu has two en-suite bedrooms. For a whole lodge to yourselves, Royal Chundu's Island Lodge can be booked for exclusive use.
Is babysitting available at these lodges?
Some lodges offer it and some don't, so check before you book. Thorntree River Lodge arranges babysitting on request, and Royal Chundu's Children's Club is supervised by river guides or child minders. Royal Zambezi Lodge doesn't provide nannies, but a guard will watch your suite while you dine on the main deck.
How are safari activities adapted for children?
Lodges tailor game drives, boat trips and fishing to hold a child's attention. At Royal Zambezi Lodge that might mean pausing a boat trip for boule on a sandbar, or fishing for bream and chessa instead of tigerfish. Chundukwa River Lodge offers child-friendly horseback rides and time with the donkeys, sheep and geese on its farm.
Do wild animals walk through these lodges?
Yes, and that is part of the thrill: several of these lodges are unfenced. Elephants and hippos roam through Thorntree River Lodge, elephants cross Toka Leya Camp on their way to drink at the river, and wildlife wanders through Puku Ridge Camp in South Luangwa.
