The Madikwe Game Reserve covers 75,000 hectares (750 km²) of bushveld, Kalahari sand and rocky ridges, and it is home to 66 large mammal species, 25 of them carnivores. That includes the Big 7 — elephant, lion, leopard, rhino, buffalo, cheetah and African wild dog — alongside both spotted and brown hyena, and plains game in real numbers. Birders have around 350 recorded species to work through, boosted by the reserve's position on the edge of the Kalahari basin.
We will say it plainly: Madikwe is the reserve we send people to when they want the wildlife of a great national park without the traffic. Because only lodge vehicles may operate inside the fence, sightings stay quiet and unhurried. It remains a firm favourite of ours and we have never come away disappointed at any one of the lodges we have stayed at ourselves.

Getting there is straightforward. Madikwe is roughly 341 km from O.R. You may drive your own car from the gate to your lodge; a sedan copes, though the gravel rewards a little ground clearance.

A Madikwe self-drive safari means driving yourself to the reserve rather than flying in — you keep the freedom of your own vehicle for the journey, and hand the game viewing to the lodge once you arrive. Self-drive game viewing is not permitted inside Madikwe, so every drive is ranger-led in an open 4x4 and included in your rate. It is the most flexible and best-value way to reach the reserve from Johannesburg or Pretoria.

Can you self-drive around Madikwe Game Reserve?
No. Self-drive game viewing is not permitted anywhere in Madikwe. You may drive your own car from the entrance gate to your lodge, and that is where it ends — every game drive is run by the lodge, in an open 4x4, with a qualified ranger at the wheel.
Are day visitors allowed into Madikwe?
No. Madikwe admits overnight guests with a lodge booking only, so the shortest possible safari is one night. There are no day-visitor gates, picnic sites or public through-roads. The upside is a quiet reserve: only lodge vehicles work the sightings, which keeps them uncrowded.
What sort of vehicle do I need to drive to my Madikwe lodge?
An ordinary sedan is fine. Roads inside the reserve turn to gravel and the final approach to most lodges is gravel throughout, so a little ground clearance helps, particularly after summer rain. Avoid low-profile tyres, and drive slowly — wildlife has right of way from the gate onwards.
What does a typical day on safari in Madikwe look like?
A wake-up call before first light, coffee, then a morning game drive of three to four hours with a stop in the bush. Back for brunch, and the middle of the day is yours. Afternoon tea, then an afternoon drive ending with sundowners and a spotlit run home, followed by dinner.
What activities are there besides game drives?
Everything is arranged through your lodge rather than booked independently, because only lodge vehicles and qualified rangers may operate inside the reserve. Walks go out at first light with an armed guide, night drives run on the back of the afternoon drive, and specialist options are requested when you book, not on arrival.
How many nights should I book in Madikwe?
Three nights is our recommendation. That gives you five or six game drives, which is enough to see the Big 5 without chasing them, and leaves room for a walk or a night drive. Two nights works if you are slotting Madikwe into a longer South African trip.
