A small note to start off with: for well over 20 years now, Buitenverwachting has been making one of our favourite white wines - Buitenverwachting Buiten Blanc. So when it comes to wine tasting in the Constantia area, this is the wine estate that is a must visit recommendation from us.
The wine tasting area is all indoors with staff that are knowledgeable about the wines, brandies, gin and grappa (brandies, gin and grappa when available). We would suggest the full tasting menu so as to experience as many wines as possible.
As mention above the "Buiten Blanc" is our personal favourite white wine, but give the "Husseys Vlei Sauvignon Blanc" a try - it is oh so yummy. When it comes to the red variety "Christine" and the "Merlot" are up there with the best in the region.
There are two restaurants adjoining the tasting area. The main restaurant is one of the best in South Africa and has culinary awards as proof. On the other side of the tasting area is the "Coffee BloC" where coffee's, cakes and light lunches are served.
Another highlight of the estate is that one can order a picnic basket and have a spot of lunch sitting on the grass surrounded by historic building, this is something that we highly recommend for couples, families and the young and old alike. Just stunning.
To sum up Buitenverwachting; Scenic, outstanding wines, delicious cuisine, excellent staff and a visit is highly recommended.
The estate is not really suitable for children in the main tasting area, but on saying that order a picnic basket and the kids will have the time of their lives.
