Madikwe Safari Lodge sits inside the 75,000-hectare Madikwe Game Reserve on South Africa's Botswana border, and it is one of very few properties in the country where you can watch lion at first light and know nobody in your party needs a single anti-malarial. Earthy plastered walls, dry packed stonework and rough wooden beams make the lodge look as though it has grown out of the rust-red ground like a gigantic termite mound.

Every suite and every guest area at Madikwe Safari Lodge faces the game-rich plains, with the Dwarsberg Hills on the horizon and the Marico River running through the landscape as a green ribbon. The reserve sits at roughly 1,000 metres above sea level, which keeps summer heat manageable and winter mornings genuinely cold — take the poncho they hand you on the vehicle.

Madikwe Safari Lodge is split into three individual camps, each with its own décor, its own atmosphere and its own separate dining. You are never eating breakfast next to a stranger's family unless you have chosen to.

Rooms and Suites

Madikwe Safari Lodge has 20 luxury suites divided across three camps, and all 20 come with a private plunge pool, a fireplace, air-conditioning, a double or king-sized bed, and an en-suite bathroom with a bathtub plus indoor and outdoor showers.

Lelapa — the name means "family" — is the largest of the three, with 12 suites. Four of these are two-bedroom family suites, the second bedroom fitted with bunk beds and a sleeper couch. This is the only one of the three camps that takes children of any age.

Kopano has four suites and does not accept children under 16. It is the quieter, more sociable of the two adults-only camps.

Dithaba also has four suites and is likewise reserved for guests aged 16 and over. With half the bed count of Lelapa spread across its own dining and lounge areas, it is the closest thing here to a private house.

Cuisine and Wine

Madikwe Safari Lodge serves traditional Southern African cuisine matched with South African wines, and each of the three camps has its own kitchen and dining areas rather than a single shared restaurant. Meals move with the day — breakfast after the morning drive, high tea before the afternoon vehicles leave, dinner under the stars in the boma when the weather allows. Wildlife Activities

Madikwe Safari Lodge runs two game drives a day, leaving early morning and again in the late afternoon into the dark, each guided by a ranger across a network of tracks covering the reserve's very different habitats. Rangers here know the resident animals individually and will shape a drive around what you actually want to see.

Madikwe is one of the better places in South Africa for African wild dog and for the rarely seen brown hyena. Several of these normally secretive animals have grown used to game-drive vehicles and provide reliable sightings. Late afternoon drives usually work the dams, which is where the elephant and buffalo congregate. Night drives pick up bushbabies leaping between branches in the acacia savanna, along with genet, civet and spotted eagle-owl.

Beyond the vehicle, guests at Madikwe Safari Lodge can take guided bush walks, sundowners out on the plains, astronomy sessions under some of the darkest skies within four hours of Johannesburg, and wildlife lectures. Spa treatments are available on site.

Children of all ages are welcome at Madikwe Safari Lodge's Lelapa camp only — Kopano and Dithaba are both 16 and over. Lelapa's four two-bedroom family suites sleep parents and children in separate rooms, with bunk beds and a sleeper couch in the second bedroom.
