Introduction
With an enchanting view over the Makhutsi River, Karongwe River Lodge encompasses a spacious lounge area that leads onto a vast deck that allows for endless opportunities to view elephants and grazing antelopes.
Guests can settle in at their leisure, with a choice of room types, and take advantage of the African bush, allowing it to rejuvenate their senses. Karongwe River Lodge allows guests to become one with nature; inspired by the tranquil riverfront setting.
One can easily spend the afternoon relaxing beside the pool or watching the game from your private deck before being whisked away on a late afternoon safari in an open game drive vehicle.
Reserve Information
Located in the Limpopo Province, Karongwe Private Game Reserve overlooks the majestic Drakensberg Mountain Range. Nestled between 4 rivers, it is a sanctuary for wildlife which provides exceptional habitats for a diverse array of flora, fauna and prolific birdlife. The Makhutswi River runs through the reserve creating a unique biosphere; an untamed and tranquil Eden, rich in wildlife and timeless beauty.
The 21000 acres of land, gives way to the viewing of the sought after Big 5, in particular, the lush environment is one of the best locations to spot the most elusive, Leopard. With inspirational game drives and walking safaris, Karongwe Private Game Reserve is the perfect getaway for a safari and only 45 minutes for the Kruger National Park.
Rooms and Suites
Karongwe River Lodge offers a variety of rooms types for guests; 11 air-conditioned rooms.
- Five Luxury Suites (double beds only, no twins) all air-conditioned and separate en-suite bathrooms with both bath and shower.
- The two Family Suites are open plan and can accommodate up to 3 children sharing with parents.
- Two Executive Suites with exceptional private decks are larger than the luxury suites, complete with lounge area.
- Ideal for Honeymooners, the two Presidential Suites have their own private plunge pools, decks and loungers.
All beds have mosquito nets and rooms are equipped with tea/coffee stations, safe and hairdryers.
Gowns are also available for guest’s use.
Cuisine and Wine
At Karongwe River Lodge, the emphasis is on delicious food experiences. Whether it be dining under the stars outside in the boma, or in the beautifully appointed dining room, guests can be ensured of fabulous Pan Africa Cuisine. Gourmet plated evening meals in the African bush have never been so romantic and although communal dining is the norm, Karongwe River Lodge is perfect for intimate meals for two.
To complement any meal, there is an attentive selection of fine South African wines, imported beers, as well as an extensive selection of spirits and soft drinks.
Lodge Facilities
A sparkling pool for cooling off in the heat of the day is located in the main public area, longers and pool towels are also available. The well-stocked bar, dining and lounge areas look out over the river for the perfect location to relax and enjoy all that the Karongwe Reserve has to offer.
A small library is also available, with many books on wildlife, ecology and the fauna of the Greater Kruger Region.
The Little Paws Centre for Children is full of fun interactive activities for the younger safari-goers. Activities include; hair braiding, face painting, tracker 101 course, cookie baking, clay making tracks, bubbles, board games, goodie bags and children's veggie garden.
Spa treatments are available on request while staying at Karongwe River Lodge, the treatment facility offers the finest African plant extracts and traditional rituals.
Same day limited laundry service available at additional cost.

Safari Activities
With over 9000 hectares of the supreme African bush to traverse, the twice-daily game drives are conducted in open safari vehicles with qualified and knowledgeable guides. Each vehicle also has a local Shangaan tracker, who will share their vast experience of the African Bush and offer up opportunities to teach some of the traditional ways of the region.
The Karongwe Reserve is home to the Big Five (Lion, Leopard, Buffalo, Rhino and Elephant) as well as a variety of other diverse wildlife and over 365 different birds. Game drives allow for many photographic opportunities; from the views of the Lowveld from a “kopje” amid the lush vegetation to the huge variety of trees and flora.
Morning game drives commence after coffee/tea and rusks, as the sun rises and wildlife begins to move about to start their day. The afternoon game drive heads out after afternoon tea and will return as the sun sets and the nocturnal animals make their way out for the evening. Guests will be able to enjoy a sundowner while the sun sets over the magnificent Drakensberg Mountains.
On request and subject to availability of guides, guests have the opportunity to go on foot for a bushwalk. This is one of the best ways to experience the bushveld; get close to the smaller aspects of nature and truly feel the wonderment of the African bush.
Family Friendly
Children are most welcome. Little Paw Centre with a children's program, childminding and babysitting services are all available at an additional cost.
Please note; children under 6 years are not permitted on any game activity unless approved by the Lodge Management onsite.
