Victoria Nile Lodges
Victoria Nile Lodges Below Jinja: An Island Hideaway and a Riverbank Club
Below Jinja, the Victoria Nile leaves Lake Victoria behind and picks up speed – a broad, warm river broken by rapids and wooded mid-stream islands. Adrift introduced commercial rafting to Uganda on this river in 1996, and our two Victoria Nile lodges sit close together near Kalagala, in the Kangulumira area.
Lemala Wildwaters Lodge has Kalagala Island to itself and is reached only by boat. Ten suites are tucked into the island's riverine forest, linked by raised wooden walkways to a main lodge set on a rock peninsula among the rapids, with a pool above the water.
Adrift River Club opened in 2022 on the western bank, right beside the Adrift Adventure Centre, where rafting, kayaking and river cruises are booked. Rooms face the river or the garden, there's an outdoor pool, and children are welcome.
This is river country rather than big-game country: look for river otters and monitor lizards along the banks, and waterbirds working the rapids. We've rafted the Nile from Jinja ourselves – read the story in White Water Rafting Uganda.
A night or two on the Nile combines well with a gorilla trek or a savannah park – browse our Uganda safaris, compare areas on the Uganda lodges page, or check the Kampala–Jinja drive on the Uganda distance table.
Malaria risk is high throughout Uganda – see Uganda malaria and malaria in Africa.

Victoria Nile Lodges: Frequently Asked Questions
Are the Victoria Nile lodges near Murchison Falls?
No. Both lodges on this page sit on the upper Victoria Nile downstream of Jinja, near Kalagala in the Kangulumira area – a long way from the Murchison Falls stretch of the same river. For places to stay around the falls and the national park, see our Murchison Falls lodges.
What is the difference between Lemala Wildwaters Lodge and Adrift River Club?
Wildwaters is an island lodge; Adrift River Club is on the riverbank. Wildwaters has Kalagala Island to itself, reached only by boat, with ten suites in riverine forest. Adrift River Club, opened in 2022 on the western bank, sits beside the Adrift Adventure Centre. The two are sister properties in the Adrift and Lemala family.
Which Victoria Nile lodge is better for families with children?
Adrift River Club is the family choice. It welcomes children, opened with child-friendly facilities, and Adrift runs family rafting trips on gentler water. Lemala Wildwaters sets a minimum age because its island is surrounded by rapids and children must be supervised at all times – we confirm the current age limit when we quote.
How do you get to Lemala Wildwaters Lodge?
By boat – every arrival ends with a short crossing to Kalagala Island. Boats don't cross after dark, so plan to arrive by 17:30. The island also has its own helipad. Road transfers from Entebbe, Kampala or Jinja are arranged as part of your Uganda itinerary.
Can you go white-water rafting from these lodges?
Yes – rafting is what this stretch of the Nile is known for. Adrift introduced commercial rafting to Uganda here in 1996, and its Adventure Centre beside Adrift River Club books rafting, kayaking, river-bug trips and Nile cruises. Guests at Wildwaters join the same Adrift activities from the island.
Which Victoria Nile lodge suits a honeymoon or couples?
Lemala Wildwaters is the romantic pick. Its suites are scattered through the island's forest, each with a private deck and a pink-granite free-standing bath, and the sound of the rapids never stops. With no boat crossings after dark, evenings are quiet – candle-lit dinners above the river and nobody else's car in the car park.

There are certain names in Africa that are simply magical, conjuring up spectacular images of mystery, exotic fauna and flora, and even a touch of danger. This is one of the best places in the world to find troupes of majestic mountain gorillas. In the dense, misty forests of the Virunga Mountains, you can witness these incredible creatures in their natural habitat, an experience few other locations can offer.

From the very start, the attention to detail was exceptional. Our guides delivered a remarkably thorough safety briefing—far more comprehensive than most would expect. This wasn’t just a surface-level overview; it included multiple, mandatory practice flips in the raft, ensuring every participant felt fully prepared for the thrilling challenges that awaited. The meticulous preparation added a layer of confidence and excitement, setting the stage for what proved to be an unforgettable journey down one of the world’s most iconic rivers.v
Bwindi Safari Experience Uganda
Often referred to as "The Pearl of Africa" by Winston Churchill, Uganda is a country of stunning landscapes, rich culture, and incredible biodiversity. However, its history is also marked by darker times, such as the brutal civil war and the oppressive regime of the infamous dictator Idi Amin, events that remain a significant part of the nation’s story. Today, Uganda is a top destination for travelers. Most visitors come to see its famous residents—the endangered mountain gorillas. Found in the forests of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, these majestic creatures offer an unforgettable encounter in one of the world's most biodiverse ecosystems. Uganda’s beauty and wildlife attract adventurers from across the globe.
