A small, unique and intimate safari camp deep in the wilderness of Tanzania's Selous Game Reserve. This is the "Sand Rivers Selous".
The camp itself is set on the banks of the Rufiji River on a rocky peninsula with commanding views of all that surrounds it. The camp offers a blend of classic safari elegance and that rugged bush adventure feel, a stylish and comfortable lodge.
With a massive 55 000 square kilometres, the Selous is the second-largest protected area in the World. All of these square kilometres teaming with birdlife, wildlife, rivers, forests, floodplains and lakes are waiting there in front of you waiting to be explored.
Eight open-fronted rooms and suites all offering wonderful beds, panoramic views out over the river, plenty of space and probably the best showers you will come across for a while.
All rooms and suites are raised on decks overlooking the river and out onto the Selous Game Reserve, each with en-suite bathrooms, hot and cold running water, flush toilets and powerful showers.
- 5 Riverside rooms
- 3 Hillside Suites (Larger than the Riverside rooms and each one has a small private plunge pool).
Meals, whether it be breakfast, lunch or dinner (or for that matter anything in between) is an occasion like no other with the dining area overlooking a river teeming with birdlife and wildlife.
All ingredients are sourced locally and the chefs serve up some amazing dishes, you will never eat the same meal twice here.
Private dining is an available option for those looking for a bit more privacy or to add to a romantic occasion.
Sit around the bar at the end of the day, the beers are most certainly cold and there is always a good story or two to be heard.
A chill-out area near the small library overlooking the river and under the shade of trees is the spot to unwind and catch up on some reading.
The swimming pool is where one can relax and hide from the heat of the day. The perfect area to tan, relax, unwind and keep the family occupied.
Open-sided 4x4 vehicles are used for the daily game drives through this region of the Selous Game Reserve accompanied by an expert safari guide and tracker.
Boat safaris in the late afternoon are highly recommended as one drifts downstream flanked by great white pelicans fishing, wallowing families of elephant socializing, prides of lion sleeping off a meal.
Walking through the surrounding bushveld and along the river banks with one's armed safari guide provides that unique opportunity to learn and witness all the little marvels that are the Selous.
For those interested in a spot of fishing, this area offers some amazing chances to get that catch of the day. The lodge does have fishing equipment.
Children of 8 yrs and over are most welcome at Sand Rivers Selous and can participate in most safari activities other than fly camping. Walking activities were children need to be 12 yrs and older. Other than that, Sands River Selous Camp is a fantastic option for families looking for a wild and remote destination.
