A Safari Camp On The Banks Of Lake Victoria, A Visit Rubondo Island Offers Up A Chimpanzee Experience
In the southwest corner of Lake Victoria lies an extraordinary example of wildlife conservation, Rubondo Island National Park. Rubondo Island, at its widest, is 10km, and at its longest, 26km, with more than 75% covered in pristine and untouched equatorial rainforest.
The island and her forest are a haven for wild chimpanzees, sitatunga antelopes, elephants and giraffes.
Rubondo Island Camp is the only Lake Victoria Lodges option on the island, therefore, offering guests the ultimate in exclusivity and privacy when on safari.
The camp consists of 8 beach cottages, all with either a veranda or balcony that offers guests stunning views over Lake Victoria.
There are a number of activities on offer at Rubondo Island Camp, but the highlight is definitely the chimpanzee habituation experience. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see chimpanzees in the wild and learn about their behaviour and ecology.
Please note the only way of getting here is by chartered light aircraft, and out of interest, one can fly in directly from Kigali (Rwanda) to easily combine this wild island escape with an epic gorilla encounter in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park.
Eight thatched-roofed cottages (including one larger family cottage) are all situated on the waterfront of Lake Victoria.
All cottages at Rubondo Island Camp offer high ceilings, a private terrace overlooking the lake, king-sized beds (with mosquito netting), and en-suite bathrooms with indoor showers, basins and flushing toilets.
The family cottage is slightly larger than the others and can accommodate up to a family of four people. It has two double bedrooms (one of which is on a mezzanine level), both with en-suite bathrooms and a small shared living room.
The team in the kitchen at Rubondo Island Camp will stun and delight one with a delicious array of freshly prepared cuisine, whether it be breakfast, lunch or dinner.
One is in for a right royal treat when staying here on this almost private island.
Meals are served al fresco on the main deck overlooking the beach, where you can relax with your toes in the sands of Lake Victoria.
At Rubondo Island Camp, visitors can enjoy a fine selection of wine to accompany ones meal. The camp has a good wine list that features red and white wines from all over the world. Whether you're enjoying a romantic dinner on the beach or a casual lunch on the deck, there's a wine to complement your meal perfectly.
The lodge facilities at Rubondo Island Camp are excellent and on a level that one would expect from any Asilia Africa camp in Africa.
There is a swimming pool with sun loungers, a viewing deck, a beach fire pit, and both an indoor dining area and an outdoor dining area.
Island Camp has generator power and battery-charging facilities to keep one's cameras, computers and phones fully charged throughout the day and night
You'll also enjoy complimentary laundry service and Wi-Fi and internet connectivity.
The stunning and wild Rubondo Island is 26 km long and 10 km at its widest point and is mostly covered in pristine forest that supports both wildlife and fantastic birdlife.
Safari activities at Rubondo Island Camp include a chimpanzee habituation experience, game drives, birding excursions, fishing (catch and release), boating, cultural visits, and forest walks. This makes it the perfect destination for an unforgettable safari experience on the banks of Lake Victoria.
For birders, there are more than 300 bird species on show.
Of particular interest; between November and March, wild orchids bloom, attracting a dazzling array of butterflies.
