Madikwe covers 75,000 hectares, or 750 square kilometres, along the South African border with Botswana. The Dwarsberg mountains close it off to the south. Open bushveld and red Kalahari sand fill the middle, and the Marico River marks the eastern edge. In short, it is large enough that your choice of lodge really does shape your days.
Look closely and the reserve falls into loose sectors. Camps in the north sit near the Botswana boundary, where the bush is thicker and the traverses feel wild. Southern lodges gather under the Dwarsberg hills, so the ground rises and the views run long. Central properties put you on the open plains, which is where wild dog and cheetah are seen most often. Of course each lodge drives its own traverse, so position matters more here than it does in a small reserve.
Two things the map will not tell you. First, Madikwe is malaria-free, which is why so many families and older travellers choose it. Second, day visitors are not allowed, so every guest stays at least one night inside the fence. That rule keeps the roads quiet and the sightings calm. To be fair, it also makes this Madikwe map a booking tool rather than a day-trip guide.
