Madikwe covers 75,000 hectares, or 750 square kilometres, along the South African border with Botswana. The Dwarsberg mountains close it off to the south. Look closely and the reserve falls into loose sectors. Camps in the north sit near the Botswana boundary, where the bush is thicker and the traverses feel wild. Southern lodges gather under the Dwarsberg hills, so the ground rises and the views run long. Central properties put you on the open plains, which is where wild dog and cheetah are seen most often. Of course each lodge drives its own traverse, so position matters more here than it does in a small reserve.
Two things the map will not tell you. First, Madikwe is malaria-free, which is why so many families and older travellers choose it. Second, day visitors are not allowed, so every guest stays at least one night inside the fence. That rule keeps the roads quiet and the sightings calm. Very close. The reserve's northern boundary is the international border itself, and Gaborone sits roughly 45 kilometres away — close enough that you can see the city's hills from parts of the reserve. That position is why the northern sector feels more remote than its map distance suggests.
Is Madikwe fenced?
Yes. Madikwe is a fully fenced reserve, and every guest stays at least one night inside that fence because day visitors are not permitted. The fence keeps the internal road network quiet, which is a large part of why sightings here stay calm and unhurried compared with open systems.
Where do the lodges cluster on the map?
They do not spread evenly. The map above shows tight groups in the west near Impodimo and Tuningi, in the centre around Madikwe Safari Lodge and Mateya, and in the east near Jaci's and Jamala. Each cluster shares a broad area of the reserve rather than the whole of it.
