Getting to Madikwe is simpler than the map makes it look. The reserve sits 341 kilometres from O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg. By road that works out at roughly four and a half hours, once you allow for stops. By light aircraft the same trip takes about sixty minutes. Most guests pick one or the other. Either way, a lodge vehicle meets you at the end of it.
The drive is an easy one by African standards. Much of it runs on good tar, through farmland and small bushveld towns. Fill up before the last stretch, because fuel stops thin out as you head north. The final approach to some gates is gravel. Madikwe has several entrances and they sit a long way apart, so ask your lodge which gate to use before you leave home. A mapping app will happily send you to the wrong one.
Flying suits anyone short of time or wary of a long drive. Charters leave O.R. Tambo and land on an airstrip inside the reserve. An hour replaces half a day, which is why children and older travellers tend to prefer it. That said, the road brings you in slowly. There is something to be said for watching the landscape dry out and open up as you go. The bush thickens in the final hour.
