Namibia Distance Table
Namibia Driving Distances and Times Between Key Towns
Our Namibia distance table gives road distances in kilometres and estimated drive times between the main towns on a self-drive or guided road safari, plus Namutoni rest camp in Etosha National Park. Distances are long and many roads are gravel, so knowing what each leg involves shapes the whole itinerary.
In our experience, eight hours or more on the road makes for a tiring safari day rather than a good one. Where the itinerary allows, we keep driving between destinations to four or five hours a day, which leaves the afternoon free for sightseeing after checking in to your lodge or hotel. For overnight stops on the longer legs, see our Windhoek, Swakopmund and Etosha lodge pages.
The speed limit is 60 km/h in towns, 120 km/h on tarred roads outside towns and 100 km/h on gravel, unless signs say otherwise. That is the legal maximum, not a target. The UK Foreign Office advises no more than 80 km/h on gravel in the rainy season, when roads deteriorate, and we would keep to that all year.
General driving rules for travel in Namibia:
- Avoid driving at night outside towns — wildlife and livestock wander onto the roads
- Ask locals about road conditions to your next destination
- Carry extra fuel, plenty of water and snacks
- Carry two spare tyres — punctures are common on gravel
- A good paper map is a sensible backup for GPS
- Toilet paper in the vehicle never goes amiss
Google Maps is a useful planning tool, but its estimated drive times may not reflect the slower speeds that are sensible on gravel, or allow for stops, weather and roadworks. On gravel routes, allow extra time. For hire cars, licences and insurance, see getting around Namibia.

Namibia Distance Table FAQ
How long is the drive from Windhoek to Swakopmund?
The drive from Windhoek to Swakopmund is 361 km and takes about 3 hours 45 minutes on Google Maps' fastest route, via the B2. The route is tarred throughout, which makes it a comfortable first or last leg of a self-drive, with the afternoon free to explore the coast.
How far is Lüderitz from Windhoek?
Lüderitz is 682 km from Windhoek, about 7 hours 38 minutes on Google Maps' fastest route. That is well beyond the four to five hours a day we suggest, so plan an overnight stop on the way. From Keetmanshoop it is a shorter 337 km, about 3 hours 24 minutes, along the B4.
How long does it take to drive from Windhoek to Rundu?
Windhoek to Rundu is 716 km, about 7 hours 27 minutes on Google Maps' fastest route via the B1 and B8. It is too long for one comfortable day. Tsumeb to Rundu is 319 km, about 3 hours 26 minutes, so Tsumeb works well as an overnight stop on the way north.
How many hours a day should I drive in Namibia?
We suggest driving no more than four to five hours a day between destinations. That leaves time to check in and enjoy an afternoon activity rather than arriving at dusk. Longer legs in the table, such as Keetmanshoop to Swakopmund at 763 km, are best split over two days.
Should I avoid driving at night in Namibia?
Yes. The UK Foreign Office advises against driving at night outside towns, because wildlife and livestock on the road are serious hazards. Plan each day so you arrive in daylight, and treat Google Maps' times as a minimum — on gravel, your real driving time will usually be longer.
Where do the distances and drive times in this table come from?
Every distance and estimated drive time in this table comes from Google Maps, using its fastest suggested route, checked in October 2026. Namutoni is measured to the rest camp inside Etosha National Park. Roadworks and closures can change Google's routing, so check your route again before setting off.
