Plan Your Uganda Safari: Gorillas, Chimps, Savannah and the Nile

Uganda packs a remarkable range into a single trip: mountain gorillas in the forests of Bwindi Impenetrable and Mgahinga, chimpanzees in Kibale, open savannah and the Kazinga Channel in Queen Elizabeth National Park, and the Nile forcing its way through the gorge at Murchison Falls. The planner below is the quickest way to turn that wish list into a safari built around you.

The more you tell us, the sharper our first suggestion will be:

  • Your dates, or roughly when you'd like to travel. Our guide to when to visit Uganda sets out how the seasons shape trekking and game viewing.
  • Gorilla trekking plans. Permits are controlled by the Uganda Wildlife Authority and are limited, and international visitors book them through a licensed Ugandan tour operator, so the sooner we know your dates, the better.
  • Who's travelling, including the ages of any children. Treks and many lodges have age rules, and we'll match the trip to them.
  • The regions and activities that appeal. Tick "Undecided" if you're not sure, and we'll suggest a route.
  • Your budget per person. Lodges are priced as part of the whole itinerary, from comfortable forest lodges to the finest lodges in Uganda.
  • Whether you need flights to Entebbe.

We've been arranging tailor-made African safaris since 1999, owner-run from Cape Town. Send the form and we'll come back to you with a suggested itinerary, or browse our Uganda safaris for ideas first.

Uganda the Pearl of Africa

There are certain names in Africa that are simply magical, conjuring up spectacular images of mystery, exotic fauna and flora, and even a touch of danger. I had the immense pleasure of visiting one of these places last year: the magnificent Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, located in the southwest corner of Uganda. This is one of the best places in the world to find troupes of majestic mountain gorillas. In the dense, misty forests of the Virunga Mountains, you can witness these incredible creatures in their natural habitat, an experience few other locations can offer.

White Water Rafting Uganda

Our whitewater rafting adventure on the Nile River, without a doubt one of the most exhilarating experiences of my life, began at the vibrant Nile River Explorers backpackers in Jinja. From the very start, the attention to detail was exceptional. Our guides delivered a remarkably thorough safety briefing—far more comprehensive than most would expect. This wasn’t just a surface-level overview; it included multiple, mandatory practice flips in the raft, ensuring every participant felt fully prepared for the thrilling challenges that awaited. The meticulous preparation added a layer of confidence and excitement, setting the stage for what proved to be an unforgettable journey down one of the world’s most iconic rivers.v

Bwindi Safari Experience Uganda

Often referred to as "The Pearl of Africa" by Winston Churchill, Uganda is a country of stunning landscapes, rich culture, and incredible biodiversity. However, its history is also marked by darker times, such as the brutal civil war and the oppressive regime of the infamous dictator Idi Amin, events that remain a significant part of the nation’s story. Today, Uganda is a top destination for travelers. Most visitors come to see its famous residents—the endangered mountain gorillas. Found in the forests of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, these majestic creatures offer an unforgettable encounter in one of the world's most biodiverse ecosystems. Uganda’s beauty and wildlife attract adventurers from across the globe.
