Set on a dune overlooking the wild and remote shores of Maputuland and the Indian Ocean. Thonga Beach Lodge is ideal for those looking to discover one the last true wilderness destinations.
Surrounded by coastal forests, grasslands, bush, shimmering lakes and beautiful sandy beaches but it is without question the warm crystal clear waters of the Indian Ocean that attracts guests; fantastic snorkelling and off-shore scuba diving.
Giant Leatherback and Loggerhead turtles laying eggs and those eggs hatching would be the absolute highlight of staying here. This event occurs in the summer months of South Africa.
Thonga Beach Lodge is found in Mabibi Bay on the pristine shores of the Maputuland coast, KwaZulu-Natal; within the 332 000 hectare iSimangaliso Wetland Park a UNESCO World Heritage site. Close to coral reefs with over 1200 species of fish making this the perfect destination for those into SCUBA and snorkelling.
12 thatched luxuriously appointed suites are all hidden on the side of a coastal dune, some offering spectacular ocean views while others are found deep in the surrounding forest.
All suites are raised off the ground and are connected by walkways, ensuring minimal harm is done to surrounding vegetation.
Private wooden viewing decks, king-sized beds, and open-plan en-suite bathrooms with indoor and outdoor showers and large bathtubs. A few of the suites offer guests private plunge pools.
The dining area - a large thatched 'rondavel' - opens on to an expansive wooden deck, where guests can enjoy Maputuland's sultry weather and the lodge's sumptuous meals.
Most meals will be served al fresco, or, guests can head for the beach and dine by candlelight on the shores of the Indian Ocean.
A bar area with views out over the Indian ocean, beach and surrounding forest offers guests cocktails and ice cold beers.
The central guest area at Thonga Beach Lodge offers a lounge with open fireplace, an indoor dining area both with spectacular views of the beach.
