Images and photographs of Kolmanskop, a ghost town located within a five-minute drive from the coastal town of Luderitz.
The wealth that Kolmanskop generated through diamond mining was extraordinary, at one point the town consisted of a hospital (with an x-ray -station in the southern hemisphere), theatre and sport-hall, casino, ballroom, electrical power station, school, bowling alley, ice factory and the first tram line in Africa. Most of these were imported directly from Germany at a considerable cost. Now all this is a ghost town.
When on safari in the southern regions of Namibia including the Fish River Canyon and Luderitz, a visit to Kolmanskop is highly recommended, just for the photography alone, never mind the fascinating history on offer. We would also suggest a guided tour when visiting, tours are conducted in either English or German, although they are only held at set times.
