Chiawa is a must for any visit to Zambia. Superb accommodation, magnificent game viewing and scenery, and a large variety of activities are complemented by a modern infrastructure, renowned guiding and attentive professional staff.

Resting peacefully on the banks of the Zambezi River, under a grove of evergreen Mahogany trees, Chiawa Camp holds the prime position in the heart of Zambia's Lower Zambezi National Park.

Constructed mainly of natural materials Chiawa Camp blends in effortlessly with its idyllic surroundings and it is here where guests receive the very best Africa has to offer. A stunning thatched lounge/bar area with upstairs viewing deck provides one of the best views of the Zambezi.

Enjoy this Lower Zambezi Luxury Camp renowned cuisine on our al-fresco dining veranda - naturally vegetarians are catered for; however please give us advance notice of any special culinary requirements. After dinner, retire to the campfire and enjoy a cocktail or two while taking in the sounds and magic of the African night.

In a hidden corner of camp there is a viewing hide up in a Mahogany tree from where you can watch life and the Zambezi go by or you could opt to take a dip in Chiawa's refreshing plunge pool, complete with sun deck, overlooking the Zambezi of course!

Rooms & Suites:

Chiawa Luxury Safari Tents are available with two twin beds or a double. These elegantly appointed and generously proportioned tents are the epitome of Old Africa safari style but with all the comfort and convenience necessary for today's discerning adventurer. Set on elevated timber decks overlooking the Zambezi River, these have 220v and 12v electricity, brass electric table fans and feature en-suite shower, flush loo and washbasin - with hot and cold running water 24/7 of course.

Chiawa's Honeymoon Tent has a beautiful view of the Zambezi, the escarpment and Chiawa dry river bed. The tent is the same size as the Luxury Safari Tents, has a double bed, a Victorian bath with a view, his & hers wash basins and a shower big enough for two - all in wood and brass.

Chiawa Camp has two Superior Safari Tents and these offer Africa's very finest tented accommodation. These "tents" set a new standard for Zambia in bush-luxury; however they still retain the rustic and unpretentious feel that Chiawa is so well loved for. Each is extra large, under thatch, has amazing views, a King bed, ceiling and table fan, 220v and 12v electricity, pure cotton linens, Molton Brown amenities, en-suite bathrooms each with island roll-top bath, his & hers washbasins, and indoor & outdoor showers.

Food & Wine:

Chiawa Camp is renowned for its excellent cuisine, oft described as an Afro/Euro fusion, in which even the most demanding palates are catered for.

Depending on the day's activities, breakfasts, brunches and lunches are hot & cold buffet usually served al-fresco, sometimes in the bush, and even on a boat in the middle of the Zambezi!

Afternoon tea with sweet & savoury snacks is usually served upstairs on the viewing platform overlooking the Zambezi and just prior to the afternoon safari activities.

Dinners are usually 4 courses, table d'hote, always offered with a choice of main course, and served under the stars by the camp fire or, if you are visiting during the full moon, on a sand bar in the middle of the Zambezi.

Activities at Chiawa Camp:

Bush Walks: Pioneered in Zambia, bush walks are essentially a "micro-safari". An armed ranger will guide you through the wilderness on foot, interpreting spoor, identifying the various flora and fauna, and highlighting conservation issues. The pace is leisurely and the duration is determined by guests' requirements. Typically, a few hours is sufficient.
Game Drives: The safest and most effective way to view big game. Usually departing in the early morning, drives can last anywhere from 2 to 4 hours depending on what's seen and the requirements of the guests. In the late afternoon drives set off for an hour or so before stopping at a scenic point for sundowners.
River Safaris: One of the great aspects of a visit to the Camp are the activities offered by virtue of our presence on the Zambezi river. The Camp is one of the few lodges permitted to conduct waterborne safaris within the National Park, and our 8m motorised pontoon is ideal to take advantage of this.
Fishing: Expert guides are on hand to assist you in finding the notorious tigerfish (camp record 10.1kg, average 2kg) and other species that abound in the Zambezi River. The Camp is currently the only lodge offering professionally guided sport fishing inside the Lower Zambezi National Park.
Canoeing: Although the Zambezi offer many activities, perhaps it is best known for canoeing. No where else is there such a combination of breathtaking scenery, varied wildlife and such interesting channels to paddle through. Six meter long Canadian canoes are used and these trips may last anywhere from 1 hour to 1 day.
