Pole Pole Resort at Mafia Island's Marine Park is a new kind of resort. Consisting of only seven bungalows, our island home promises personal attention and service. "Pole Pole" means "take it easy" in Swahili.
Situated in the Utende area of Mafia Island (map), the resort is Archipelago's main base. It is set in a shady, breezy spot facing a sea of the deepest blue and looking over at the islands of Chole, Juani and Jibondo.
Pole Pole Resort is a new kind of luxury travel experience that combines the principles of ecotourism, a small resort setting and one of the most pristine and exotic environments in the world.
ROOM & SUITE TYPES:
The roomy bungalows at Pole Pole Resort with wide verandas looking onto the sea are built entirely out of wood and raised on stilts to ensure the maximum comfort for the guests. Each bungalow covers 60 sq m with personalized fixtures and finishings. The floors are made out of hard woods (afrormosia, one of the rarest and valued tropical woods), the furniture from mahogany and the door and window frames from doussi.
The beds have wooden slats and high quality spring mattresses. All linen is imported from Italy. Bathrooms have double washbasins, king-size showers, bidets and toilets.
FOOD & WINE:
The cuisine is a combination of diverse culinary traditions and cultures, with an Italian style touch of class. Swahili dinners are served once a week or on request. The resort caters for special dietary requirements whenever possible. Most of the food served is organically grown and bought on the island to help fishermen and farmers benefit from tourism development.
FACILITIES:
You can enjoy a relaxing body massage using essential oils in our peaceful massage centre overlooking the beach. Our masseuse has been trained in holistic massage based on aromatherapy. Manicure and pedicure are also available.
Books, magazines and articles about nature, archeology, history, anthropology, wildlife, underwater life and photographs and diving information are available. Playing cards and board games are also available.
ACTIVITIES:
Snorkelling; Coral rocks emerging from the bay surrounded by an extremely interesting reef which can be reached even byless expert swimmers.
Diving; The most outstanding dive site in Mafia Island is Chole Bay. It is a vast circular bay where the depth goes from 5 to 27 metres. The continuous replacement of waters due to the tide offers an excellent environment, which has brilliantly defended itself from the calamity "El Nino".
Marimbani Sand Bank; A strip of dazzling white sand which appears during low tide, surrounded by crystal-clear water.
Chole Island; The oldest, still inhabited settlement in the archipelago, with the ruins of old Arab buildings used by the Germans during the World War I. The island is covered by extremely varied lush vegetation.
Kua Ruins; On Juani Island, one of the largest and most characteristic islands in the archipelago, are the ruins of the ancient city of Kua, whose decline, as yet unexplained by archaeological and historical, is the object of many legends.
