Starting in South Africa's city of gold we travel to the capital city, Pretoria, to visit the old Voortrekker Monument. This privately owned historical landmark depicts the story of the European pioneers that left the Cape Colony in search of religious freedom and land for them to start a new life. Along the way, they were involved in various battles with the indigenous people and survived many trials on their search. Thereafter we stop off in the city centre and at the famous Union Buildings overlooking the Jacaranda lined streets of Pretoria/Tshwane.
Our first long travelling days sees us leave behind the hustle and bustle of the city and head to the scenic Panorama route. We pass through the old mining town of Pilgrims Rest - once a thriving town and the centre of the local gold rush. Today it houses quaint museums, restaurants and craft stores with an old mining theme. From here we travel further through the mountainous landscape to Bourke's Luck Potholes, an unusual natural river feature. The following morning we head off early to visit the Hoedspruit Wildlife Rehabilitation project. Initially started as a cheetah breeding project adjacent to the Kapama Game Reserve, Kapama now rehabilitates a wide range of animals & birds including the African Wild Dog, Barbary lions, Kind cheetah, Ground Hornbills and White-backed Vultures.
At Timbavi, the focus is definitely on wildlife observation and interaction. A mini-rangers course offers the chance to learn about the surrounding bushveld and its inhabitants. The game ranger will show how to read animal tracks, interpret a wild animal's body language and behaviour, and how to recognise useful or medicinal plant life. We also take part in a game drive by day, and a night game drive to observe the wildlife in its natural habitat.
We exit the Lowveld region and drive south to the Kingdom of Swaziland. After crossing the border out of South Africa, we travel up the winding roads and through the Swazi capital of Mmabane to the Mlililwane Wildlife Sanctuary. Along the way we stop off at a glass factory to see some of the local Swazi craftsmanship before exploring the roadside craft markets.
Mlilwane offers the visitor a wonderful holiday experience. Accommodation is in traditional Beehive huts made from grass and reeds in the traditional Swazi manner. The sanctuary has various animals roaming free (not harmful) and many walks and activities to occupy your time. Your trip includes a visit to the nearby Community Project - a local school and community that welcomes visitors in to help where help is needed. Spend the day assisting with lessons in the school or lend a hand in the vegetable garden. The community gladly shares their culture and traditional practices with you as you spend time together during the day.
After our cultural adventure we depart from Swaziland and head back to the City of Gold where the last day is at leisure to explore the various activities on offer. Take a trip to the lion park or explore South Africa's dark history with a trip to the Apartheid museum. Alternatively, take a tour to the biggest informal city in South Africa - Soweto and see how the various cultural groups have adapted to living a life together.
