Tiloreza Volcanoes Ecolodge: Two Nights in a Premium Deluxe Suite at the Foot of the Virungas
We stayed at Tiloreza Volcanoes Ecolodge for two nights in May 2026, in a Premium Deluxe Suite, and we paid for the stay ourselves. Nothing on this page was arranged for our benefit — this is simply what the lodge is like.
It is very good. The staff and service were the first thing we noticed and remain the thing we talk about most. The gardens run a close second. Sit outside for half an hour with a cup of coffee and the birding is exceptional — we did not expect the garden alone to be worth the trip, but it very nearly is.
Room 18 was our Premium Deluxe Suite and we would happily recommend it to any client. It is genuinely spacious, with an equally large en-suite bathroom, a separate outdoor shower, and an upstairs private sitting area with views across the gardens to the volcanoes beyond. After a day on the mountain, that upstairs balcony is exactly where you want to be.
Two small details reveal how well Tiloreza is run. Gaiters are provided free of charge for your trek, and your boots are cleaned on your return. Anyone who has come off the sodden bamboo slopes of Volcanoes National Park caked to the knee will understand why that matters.
The kitchen deserves credit too. The menu changes daily, and the range across our two nights was better than expected. Breakfast could be a touch more generous, and dinner desserts were on the modest side. The coffee, however, is outstanding.
Our only real criticisms are those portion sizes and occasionally unsteady Wi-Fi — though you are deep in rural northern Rwanda, and we would think rather less of the place if it did not.
We would be delighted to send clients here. The location is ideal for gorilla and golden monkey trekking, and the lodge itself is a genuine pleasure to return to at the end of a long day.
