There is a moment, on the drive north from Kigali, where Rwanda stops being a country of a thousand hills and starts being a country of volcanoes. The road climbs, the air cools, the terraced slopes give way to something far more dramatic, and then the Virungas simply appear — Sabyinyo, Gahinga, Muhabura, a wall of extinct giants standing shoulder to shoulder along the border. Tiloreza Volcanoes Ecolodge sits directly beneath them, on the Musanze–Kinigi road, a short drive from the gate through which a few dozen fortunate people walk each morning to meet a mountain gorilla.

We will be honest with you, because that is more useful than flattery: Kinigi has lodges that cost three times as much as this one, and it has guesthouses that cost a third. Tiloreza Volcanoes Ecolodge occupies the sweet spot in between, and it does so with real charm. This is a small, warmly run property of stone and thatch, wrapped in gardens that the gardeners are visibly proud of, with fourteen rooms and a staff-to-guest ratio that means someone remembers your name by breakfast on the first morning. It is not a palace. It is something we think most travellers value more — a genuinely comfortable, genuinely welcoming place to sleep before and after the greatest wildlife encounter on earth.

What makes it work is the attention to the things that actually matter on a gorilla trip. Breakfast is served properly early, because the briefing at the park headquarters waits for nobody. Gaiters are lent out. Muddy boots are taken away and returned clean. There is a masseuse on site for the afternoon your legs stop cooperating, a fire in the garden for the evening you want to tell somebody about it, and a swimming pool for the afternoon you simply want to lie in the sun and stare at a volcano. Everything at Tiloreza Volcanoes Ecolodge is organised around the rhythm of a trekking day, and it shows.

Rooms And Suites

The fourteen rooms at Tiloreza Volcanoes Ecolodge are built in the local idiom — stone walls, thatched roofs, deep earth tones, warm timber — and every one of them opens onto garden and mountain. There are four categories, and the honest advice is that all of them are perfectly comfortable; what you are choosing is space and privacy, not quality.

• Standard Rooms — the most affordable way into the lodge, and considerably better than "standard" suggests. En-suite, quiet, garden-facing, and entirely adequate for a two-night trekking stay.
• Deluxe Rooms — a step up in space, with a choice of one queen bed or two twin beds, and a position just a few steps from the pool and lounge. Our most-booked category, and the one we recommend for most couples.
• Premium Deluxe Rooms — the newest rooms on the property, with private terraces and the best of the Virunga views. Worth the upgrade if the weather is kind and you want to take your coffee outside at six in the morning.
• Suites and Cabanas — the pick of the lodge for families and for anyone travelling in a small group. Two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a private porch and a lounge area of your own, set slightly apart from the main buildings.

Every room is en-suite with reliable hot water — not a given at this altitude — with mosquito nets, flat-screen television, a sitting area and complimentary Wi-Fi throughout.

Cuisine And Wine

Meals at Tiloreza Volcanoes Ecolodge follow the rhythm of the mountain. Breakfast starts long before dawn on a trekking morning, and the kitchen is thoroughly used to sending guests up the hill with something hot inside them and a packed lunch in the daypack. What comes back at the end of the day is altogether more leisurely.

Dinner is served in the restaurant or, on a clear evening, at a table in the garden with the volcanoes turning purple behind you. The kitchen cooks a confident mix of Rwandan and international dishes, with vegetarian, vegan and dairy-free requirements handled properly rather than grudgingly — tell us when you book and we will make sure the kitchen knows. The bar carries wine, whisky and Rwandan beers, and there is usually somebody willing to talk you into trying the local banana beer, which is an experience in its own right and not one we will describe further here.

Breakfast is included in your nightly rate. Lunch, dinner and drinks are available at the lodge and charged separately, or we can arrange full board as part of your itinerary.

Lodge Facilities

Tiloreza Volcanoes Ecolodge is small by design, and the facilities reflect that — there is no vast lobby to get lost in, and nothing here feels corporate. What there is, is well judged:

The word "eco" in the name is not decorative. Tiloreza plants a tree for every guest who stays, through a reforestation partnership working with a women's cooperative in the Mukura region, and supports environmental and educational initiatives in the surrounding villages. Rwanda takes this seriously as a nation — it banned single-use plastic bags long before most of the world thought about it — and the lodge follows suit.

Safari Activities

Tiloreza Volcanoes Ecolodge sits within easy reach of the finest primate trekking on the continent, and a great deal else besides.

• Mountain gorilla trekking — the reason you are here, and worth every step. Rwanda's permits are strictly limited, sell out months in advance, and are restricted to trekkers aged fifteen and over. We secure yours as part of your itinerary; ask us early.
• Golden monkey trekking — a superb half-day alternative, following troops of these bright, endlessly busy little primates through the bamboo zone. Easier going than the gorillas and, we think, badly underrated.
• The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund — the Ellen DeGeneres Campus at Kinigi is a short drive away and an excellent morning out, particularly for anyone who wants to understand how the mountain gorilla was brought back from the edge.
• Volcano hikes — Mount Bisoke and its crater lake for a demanding day, or Karisimbi for a serious two-day climb.
• Musanze Caves — a lava tube system running for kilometres beneath the farmland, roughly twenty minutes from the lodge.
• Cycling — the hills around Musanze are exceptional riding, and the lodge keeps bikes for exactly this purpose.
• Culture and community — Red Rocks Arts Centre, traditional dance performances, coffee tastings and village walks, all easily arranged from the lodge.
• The Twin Lakes — Burera and Ruhondo, with canoeing and some of the loveliest scenery in northern Rwanda.
