In one of the most remarkable places in the Namib Desert, lies Sossusvlei Wilderness Camp: adjacent to the massive Sossusvlei dunes that rise dramatically more than 300 metres above the adjoining plains, and surrounded by rugged, ancient volcanic mountains.
Sossusvlei Wilderness Camp is situated on the 37 000ha private Kulala Wilderness Reserve just outside the Namib Naukluft Park. The camp is built close to the top of a mountain providing spectacular vistas of the desert valley floor and surrounding Naukluft Mountains.
The camp's location provides easy access to Sossusvlei via a private entrance, yet also offers privacy and exclusivity. The camp has been built near the top of a mountain, using rock, brick, timber and thatch and provides a comfortable refuge from the desert.
The camp is named after the nearby world-famous Sossusvlei, an enormous clay pan, flanked by the famous red sand dunes that stand out starkly against the blue sky. These dunes - the most well-known being Big Daddy or Dune 45 - have developed over millions of years, the wind continuously remodelling the contours of this red sand sea. The 'vlei' itself only fills after rare heavy rainfall when, in a complete turn-around, it becomes a spectacular turquoise lake.
ROOM & SUITE TYPES:
There are 9 guest rooms, each with its own private plunge pool. The bedrooms are well appointed and offer comfort and atmosphere with wonderful views onto the desert plains below. The en-suite bathrooms have panoramic views with both hot and cold running water, showers and flush toilets
FOOD & WINE:
Wonderful desert breakfasts are served under camel-thorn acacias surrounded by the dunes. The main living area is under thatch with an outdoor deck for dinner under the stars.
ACTIVITIES:
Afternoon nature drive or walking activities are enjoyed on the property where guests can spend time taking in the desert scenery and its unique fauna and flora.
The camp offers easy access to Sossusvlei as well as privacy and exclusivity, so early morning excursions to the dunes and the vlei are most popular. Awe-inspiring ballooning safaris are at extra cost. Experienced guides bring the desert to life during nature drives and walks, with night drives producing sightings of nocturnal species such as aardwolf, Cape fox, black-backed jackal and bat-eared fox.
