Guests gather around a campfire at dusk for snacks and sundowners. Welcome the African night, replete with elephants that ghost through the camp and the haunting cries of bush babies in the trees.
Candlelight and kerosene lanterns provide romantic evening light. The small amount of electricity used is solar generated. Close attention is paid to impact on neighboring communities.
This is a destination for those wanting a bush feel when in the Arusha area instead of staying in a stock standard hotel.
There are 16 spacious tents all with thatched roofs available at Ndarakwai Camp, each with en-suite bathrooms and a small private deck. Tasteful and rustic yet very comfortable furnishing are on offer.
The tents are positioned wide enough to ensure privacy at all time and are linked together by a walkway through the bush. The chance of seeing antelope around ones tent is almost guaranteed.
Hot showers are provided at any time of day, but water impact is kept low through collecting rainwater and using compost toilets. Water is heated in fuel-efficient boilers.
The bar in the dining area was made from non indigenous dead Eucalyptus found on the property, and the two clay fireplaces were made by local Maasai women.
Meals are prepared on propane stoves and insulated clay ovens.
Fresh produce is grown locally and on the property, other aspects of the daily meals is source from local farmers and suppliers.
