Joys Camp is an elegant oasis in the arid lands of Samburu; Joy's is built on the site of Joy Adamson's tented home in Shaba National Reserve. The site was also home to Penny the leopard, the heroine of her last book.
Joys Camp is situated in Shaba National Reserve, which is 314kms from Nairobi. Shaba National Reserve is a semi desert with a rugged hilly terrain, with great rocky kopjes (small hills) and lots of springs supporting the abundant wildlife. The landscape surrounding this Shaba Safari Camp is similar to nearby Samburu with riverine forests, acacias and doum palms.
Shaba National Reserve was made famous for its association with the world famous conservationists Joy and George Adamson and the film " Born Free".
The 10 chic canvas bedrooms are set on raised platforms with breathtaking views of the surrounding hills. The camp overlooks a large natural spring where elephant and lion jostle for watering rights with herds of buffalo and the rare desert species of Beisa Oryx, Reticulated Giraffe and Grevy's Zebra.
Each sumptuous 100 sq mtr. tent is uniquely decorated with Boran/Somali cloth design, handmade glass and the vibrant fabrics of the local nomadic tribes creating a chic, sophisticated and stylish camp.
Each tent has it's own private deck, ideal for private game viewing as well as relaxing, reading and soaking up the truly wild environs offered by Shaba.
Fresh homemade breads and pastas, traditional Italian risottos, and fresh organic salads await you at this chic boutique camp in Shaba.
During lunchtime, gaze over the camp’s neighbouring lush springs teaming with elephant, buffalo and other plains game. After nightfall, while enjoying dinner, you will look out over the floodlit springs, where lion and other predators take advantage of the early evening darkness to hunt.
At Joy’s Camp guests dine individually (unlike some of our other tented camps, where dining is communal).
Private romantic dinners can also be arranged on request.
Enjoy the cool waters in the heat of the day! The swimming pool has service from the bar, and overlooks the spring and the view.
Shaba National Reserve is enriched with extraordinary wildlife.
Game drives will incorporate varied wildlife including gravy zebra, the Somali ostrich, generuk, reticulated giraffe, lesser kudu, leopards, plenty of lion and herds of elephants.
