LalibelaThe northern Ethiopian town of Lalibela is without doubt the most visited destination in the country and for very good reason, those magnificent rock hewn churches.
The town is named after Saint Gebre Mesqel Lalibela when the town at that stage was known as Roha. The town is also known as the New Jerusalem due to her numerous religious sites, the local river is even called the River Jordan. So yes, this is a very religious orientated part of Ethiopia (and scenic for that matter).
Lalibela is approximately 2500m above sea level which is rather high but most standards and as we found rather lacking in oxygen levels. So when walking between the churches do not be surprised that one takes strain, just ask your guide for a minute or two's rest and you will start feeling good again. This is not the place to go for a morning run unless you are into high altitude training.
This page is all about the scenery surrounding the town, from vistas out onto the mountains and valleys to the people and their markets.
All photographs have been taken by us here at Uyaphi.com with the sole purpose of showcasing Lalibela the town from our point of view.
