Selous Game Reserve, located in southern Tanzania, it is home to the largest populations of some of Africa's most sought after game, including elephant, lion, wild dog, leopard, buffalo, hippo and crocodile, yet it remains one of the least visited of the great game sanctuaries on the continent. Sable Mountain Lodge consists of just 12 rooms offering a choice of stone cottages and luxury tented accommodation. Safaris from the lodge seldom encounter other vehicles in the beautiful and remote North - West of Selous. Personalised game drives, foot safaris, night drives and an incredible boat safari on Lake Tagalala are all available from the lodge. ROOM & SUITE TYPES: The camp is small and intimate with emphasis placed on a true wilderness experience combined with warm hospitality. Eight stone cottages are spaciously situated over the Beho Beho hillside. Each cottage provides stylish accommodation, the design element of which is in keeping with the surrounding natural environment. Each contains full en-suite facilities, 24 hour solar lighting, a spring water supply and wonderful views from a private verandah over the forest towards the distant Uluguru mountains. The lodge also offers three tented bandas raised up high on wooden platforms to afford the best possible views. For something extra special, there are two luxury honeymoon suites thoughtfully designed to guarantee an unforgetable romantic bush experience. FOOD & WINE: The open air restaurant serves international cuisine, and has a well stocked 'Cup and Bucket' bar, the perfect setting to unwind before dinner. A solar fridge ensures that drinks are long and cool. FACILITIES: The the swimming pool and lodging terrace affording fantastic views of the game rich hills and the path through the valley used by animals. There is a natural spring water swimming pool situated at the top of the hill, close to the tented accommodation and honeymoon suites. It is the largest pool in Selous and offers a fine way to cool off between safaris. On the South side of the camp, there is a tree-house overlooking a waterhole. Regular evening guests include elephants, buffalo, and zebra and in the months of November and December the rare sable antelope emerge from the hills seeking water. FACILITIES/ACTIVITIES: Full and half day game drives are organised from Sable Mountain Lodge in open sided 4x4 vehicles. Selous Game Reserve is a vast wilderness and there are many routes available to take. It is quite possible to spend 4 or 5 days on safari and not use the same route. They concentrate our game drives in the north-west sector of Selous Game Reserve, preferring to avoid the busier routes in the east. From the lodge, it is possible to venture out on foot, looking closer at the bird life and vegetation as well as experiencing the thrill of following big game and predators on foot. Alternatively, a short drive can quickly bring you to a dry river bed which is an ideal spot from where to start your foot safari. Selous is justifiably renowned for its lakes and rivers; giant water courses which offer marvelous opportunities to explore the heart of the reserve. Sable Mountain Lodge operates a thrilling boat safari as part of a full day excursion that includes a game drive to Lake Tagalala. The boat safari offers great opportunities to observe hippos and crocodiles at close quarters and to marvel at the bird life around the lake. |
