Northern Namibia Classic Self-Drive

SAFARI HIGHLIGHTS:
With excellent roads, good maps, flexibility, stunning scenery and some of the friendliest people in Africa, Namibia is perfect for a self-drive safari. For most of the year, the country is dry and the sky is aqua-blue. Here apricot sand dunes seem to rise out of gravel plains to topple into the Atlantic Ocean and vast open landscapes are littered with mountainous outcrops that enhance a sense of pure freedom. The lodges are very good value and most provide a host of local activities to enjoy.

» Windhoek is the capital of Namibia and has approximately 180 000 inhabitants and is 1650 m above sea level
» For most Visitors Windhoek is the entrance point to Namibia's numerous and varied attractions

» Accommodation at Hotel Heinitzburg is offered in spacious and generously appointed en-suite rooms
» Each room is fully equipped with air-condition/heating units, direct telephone lines, electronic safes, mini-bars, televisions with cable channels and music facilities

Day 4: Swakopmund
» The Swakopmund Hotel, probably the most unique feature about Namibia is its space
» Incessant deserts stretch for miles to meet the most dramatic sunsets you can imagine
» This country, with its strong German influence, has a magnificent coastline speckled with charming little towns rich in history
» One such town is Swakopmund
» Built in and around its beautifully restored Old Station Building, dating back to 1901

Day 6: Outjo
» Outjo lies on the junction of the C39 and the C38. The C38 leads to the Etosha National Park. The Okaukuejo entrance lies about 100 kilometres away from Outjo
» The town was founded by the Schutztruppe
» Major Leutwein had a small military base erected here in 1897, for expeditions into the, then unknown, north, mainly to Ovamboland
» The comfortably appointed bungalows and guest rooms at Namatubis Guest Farm encourage guests to relax at a crystal clear swimming pool, or to meander through a beautiful tropical garden with many indigenous plants and a variety of birds, or enjoy a "sundowner" on your private terrace
» Accommodation: Namatubis Guest Farm

Day 7: Etosha National Park region
» Etosha National Park is one of Southern Africa's finest and most important Game Reserves
» Etosha Game park was declared a National Park in 1907 and covering an area of 22 270 square km, it is home to 114 mammal species, 340 bird species, 110 reptile species, 16 amphibian species and, surprisingly, one species of fish

» Etosha, meaning "Great White Place", is dominated by a massive mineral pan
» The pan is part of the Kalahari Basin, the floor of which was formed around 1000 million years ago
» The Etosha Pan covers around 25% of the National Park
» The pan was originally a lake fed by the Kunene River. However the course of the river changed thousands of years ago and the lake dried up
» The pan now is a large dusty depression of salt and dusty clay which fills only if the rains are heavy and even then only holds water for a short time
» Accommodation: Mushara Lodge

» Accommodation: Hotel Heinitzburg
