Just Ovahimba SafariSAFARI HIGHLIGHTS:The safari starts from Palmwag Lodge and continues over the Sesfontein Pass into the centre of Kaokoland. Experience the nomadic way of life of the Ovahimba and enjoy three overnight stays in the Hoarusib River. A chance meeting with the desert elephant in the Hoanib River will be the definite highlight of your day. Spend a night under starry skies, close to the elephant. Continue into the western regions of the Kaokoland past the village of Kaoko Otavi. » Meet the first Ovahimba tribes still living according to ancient customs and traditions. » Wild camping on the banks of the Hoarusib River on fullboard. Day 2: Kaokoland » After a short morning walk along the Hoarusib River, the journey continues along the deep gorges and valleys of Kaokoland. » Visit various Ovahimba villages and their families. » The guest will have the perfect opportunity to experience the traditional live style and customs of this ancient ethnic group still living according to age old rituals. » The Ovahimba gratefully accept sugar, confectionery, tobacco and other trinkets as gifts. » Overnight open camping in the region of Orupembe, a large Ovahimba settlement. Day 3: Hoarusib River Valley » Today's drive continues in a southerly direction into the Khumib River valley. The vegetation grows sparse - large grass plains and savannah game adorns this region. » Later pm the trail leads across a scenic mountain pass into the densely with palm trees overgrown and constant flowing water Hoarusib river valley yet another perfect region to visit a number of villages and families which have settled in this vegetation rich grazing area. » The desert elephant often visit the Hoarusib River Valley and camping at Purros communal camp site offers a good opportunity to watch these animals feeding on the nutritious acacia pods in close proximity of the camp. » Camping on fullboard at Purros. Day 4: Hoanib River » The safari trail leads through the scenic lower Hoarusib river valley with possible good plains game and desert elephant encounters en route. » With a bit of luck, encounter the Kunene region lions who have adapted to this harsh region of the desert. » The route continues along the eastern Skeleton Coast Park into the Hoanib River. The densely overgrown river bed with numerous nutritious acacia trees providing the necessary fodder for the desert adapted elephant has become the major breeding grounds for the elephant. » Optimal chance to encounter one of the breeding herds of these giant creatures during the game viewing drives through the valleys and side arms of this unique natural paradise. » Camping on fullboard in one of the side valleys of the river. Day 4: Safari Ends » After a short guided walk in the morning, our return journey follows the course of the river valley towards the village of Sesfontein. » Numerous game encounters inclusive of roaming elephant herds feeding their way towards the next open water source will mark this special day of the tour. » Arriving at Sesfontein, visit one of the 6 springs at the mountain slopes of the village (hence the name "Sesfontein - meaning six springs") and a one-time German fort which has been restored and today functions as a lodge. » The old military cemetery with its lonely graves conjures up memories of the German Colonial period. Alleviate the midday heat in a natural "pool" of the Ongongo Waterfall near Warmquelle, where the crystal clear water of the pool is inviting and refreshing. » An ideal venue for lunch! The return trip leads through the Khowarib Gorge - a fairytale gorge through which the Hoanib River has laboriously wound its way. » After a short rest, return to Palmwag Lodge. End of tour.
