Ibo Island lies in the Quirimbas Archipelago of northern Mozambique. Nominated for World Heritage status Ibo has been described as one of the most unique and atmospheric islands in the world.

Ibo Island Lodge was built by the community, pioneering tourism development on Ibo. Today either directly or indirectly, the lodge benefits a large part of Ibo's population. Here your visit really does make a difference.

Ibo offers pristine beach excursions, snorkeling, sea kayaking, dhow sailing, birding, mangrove forests, sumptuous seafood, romance, simplicity, tranquility and a perspective that will change your life forever.

ROOM & SUITE TYPES:

All nine bedrooms are individual and feature a king size 4 poster, or twin hand crafted bed with crisp cotton linen and Indian silk throws. Wide verandas are a traditional feature of all Ibo mansions, but they widened theirs considerably to house comfortable plantation style chairs with soft cushions.

All bedrooms are individually designed and unique, with many opening onto private verandas, decked with hand crafted furniture and soft cushions covered in vibrant local fabrics. All rooms are air-conditioned and also have ceiling fans. All rooms have en-suite facilities with twin basins and large marble showers. Some have baths and outside showers.

FOOD & WINE:

Dining at Ibo Island lodge features freshly grown herbs, salads and fruits and usually combines traditional Ibo delicacies with the freshest of seafood caught on the island and from surrounding waters.

Ibo Island lodge is famous for its prawns, game fish, lobster and signature special dish: Giant dressed crab served with fragrant soft traditional coconut rice.

Romantic dinners are served in a number of different locations at the lodge, or the rooftop terrace under the stars, with its awesome views over the bay of Ibo.

FACILITIES:

Located on the prime waterfront site where romantic dhows sail out to sea on each high tide, Ibo Island lodge encompasses magnificent mansions each over one hundred years old. Coral and lime walls over a meter thick, high lofty ceilings and original beams. Ibo Island is a potential World Heritage Site, and therefore rooms have been designed to incorporate the architecture and style of the original ruins. The lodge accommodates guests in beautifully elegant, yet simple rooms, with indigenous solid teak and mahogany furniture, handcrafted by the people of Ibo.

ACTIVITIES:

Ibo Island Beach Bliss; One of the most beautiful and unspoilt beaches in the Quirimbas Archipelago is closely accessed from Ibo island, and one of Ibo's best kept secrets. A short motorised boat trip or a longer sailing dhow trip takes you to a perfect sandbank beach surrounded by sea and usually totally private with just the odd local dhow sailing past. Here we set up shade and drinks and you are free to enjoy the clear waters perfect for swimming, snorkeling, exploring and relaxing. There is a transfer to this beach each day included in the Ibo Island lodge rate. The time of the transfer is dependent on tides and the weather. Snorkelling off the sandbank is great. All snorkelling gear is provided, however you are also welcome to bring your own. Dolphins and turtles are regularly spotted from the boat.

Ibo Of Today Guided Experience; Ibo Island Lodge offers Ibo as a personal discovery for everyone who visits and the chance to interact with the friendly people of Ibo and really understand their unique Mozambique culture. A guided walk into the villages of Ibo reveals the day-to-day life of the Kimwani people. Discover how Muslim and African traditions have blended to create a way of life unique to Ibo. Visit the local witch doctor, meet some of the islanders, get an "Ibo face-mask" or even enjoy a game of football!

Historical Ibo Guided Experience; A guided journey recounting the history of Ibo and introducing Ibo Island of yesterday. Guided historical and culture activities enable guests to immerse themselves in the unique Mozambique culture of Ibo and a rare chance to understand Ibo's unchanged lifestyle. Once Mozambique's mighty trading centre, Ibo Island has remained all but forgotten to the outside world for almost a century. Wandering around this colonial little town amongst old forts and ancient romantic buildings you can almost feel the history and fascinating stories crunching under your feet.

Guided sea kayak excursion into the mangroves; One of our most popular excursions and a chance to navigate the winding, peaceful channels in one of the largest mangrove forests in Africa. Guests kayak deep into Ibo's lush, fertile mangrove channels to understand more about Ibo's precious ecosystem and the wide array of bird and marine life it supports.

Snorkelling excursion to the wreck; Discover the underwater paradise that surrounds Ibo Island - either by boat or traditional dhow and snorkel some of the best soft corals in the Quirimbas Archipelago. Weather and tide dependent.

Traditional Sailing Dhow excursion; Dhow travel is one of the most traditional and ancient ways of travelling the archipelago. The last sea faring dhow expedition sailed from India to Ibo Island in 1969! Enjoy relaxing on a traditional Quirimbas sailing dhow with a picnic lunch on Matemo Island or similar. Sunsets are usually a legendary pink, red and orange affair on Ibo Island and a sunset cruise gives you the chance to photograph mother natures spectacle against the back drop of historic Ibo whilst sipping a cocktail or two out in the bay.
