![]() KAROO COUNTRY ROADSThe Karoo (“dry thirst land”) is a vast inland semi-desert region of South Africa where time stands still. Once an ancient inland sea, the Karoo is rich in prehistoric fossils, bushman rock art and dramatic geography - like the dolomite pinnacles edging the Valley of Desolation and the spectacular vistas of the Plains of Camdeboo.
Camdeboo Accommodation Huge herds of antelope once roamed vast plains, along with the near-extinct Cape Mountain Zebra which can still be seen in Reserves like Mountain Zebra National Park and the Karoo National Park. Discover the fascinating diversity of plants and animals uniquely adapted to survival in this extreme environment. Karoo Explorer Tour Karoo towns have a charm all of their own. Graaf Reneit boasts the most historic monuments of any South African place, while nearby Nieu Bethesda is better known for the eccentric outsider art of Helen Martin's Owl House. Follow in the footsteps of Olive Schreiner in Cradock or the art of Walter Batiss in Somerset East. The faded colonial grandeur of Matjiesfontein reminds us of a time when the likes of the Sultan of Zanzibar and Lord Randolph Churchill retreated to the Karoo for the health benefits of the good clean air. Oudtshoorn is famous for its “Ostrich Palaces” built during the fashion-driven ostrich boom of the late 1800s. Recently ostrich farming has been making a comeback as ostrich becomes popular with health-conscious meat eaters the world over. Head out of town to get close and personal with a local meerkat colony or marvel at the stalactite studded limestone caverns of one of the Karoo's natural marvels, the Cango Caves. Beautiful Gorongosa National Park, which lies at the foot of the rainforest topped Mount Gorongosa in Central Mozambique, has seen a reversal in fortunes in the past decade. What was once one of the most popular reserves in Africa was decimated by the civil war that raged in Mozambique from 1977 to 1992. Gorongosa was the scene of some fierce fighting and aerial bombings and the wildlife bore the brunt.
Luckily the Gorongosa story has a happy ending. American multimillionaire Greg Carr was captivated by the area and his charitable foundation has lent substantial financial backing to the Mozambican government's efforts to restore the Park to its former glory. Game has been re-stocked, roads and infrastructure rebuilt, and anti-poaching measures stepped up. In January 2008 the Carr Foundation signed a 20-year contract with the Government to co-manage the Park and develop an ecotourism industry to benefit local communities. Gorongosa lies at the southern end of the Great East African Rift Valley. The Park includes a mosaic of ecosystems, from forested plateaus to the grasslands of the valley floor washed by rivers originating on Mount Gorongosa. The bountiful water sources support a multitide of wildlife, some endemic to the region. A private eco-tourism venture has a concession within the park. Developments at Gorongosa are good news for local people and travellers alike. Mozambique is already a haven for beach holidays and ocean activities. Adding Gorongosa to the mix makes for the perfect beach and bush adventure. ![]() UYAPHI NEWS: ZAMBIA VISITSenior Sales Consultant Nicky Searle was sent on an educational visit to many of our Zambian Safari offerings.
