ZIMBABWE: BACK ON THE MAP

Zimbabwe offers wonderful value compared with some of her neighbours, and with dwindled tourist numbers you get to enjoy the sights and famously friendly hospitality without the madding crowds. Let’s take a look at the most popular locations:

Hwange National Park
Hwange is known for its elephant herds, some of the largest in the world. The 14,650 hectare park boasts dense concentrations of game. Lying in the western reaches of Zimbabwe, Hwange was declared a national park 70 years ago to protect wildlife pushed further and further west by population pressure in the rest of the country.

The Zambezi - Victoria Falls
The mighty Zambezi River is most famous for the Victoria Falls whose splendour is best seen from the Zimbabwean side of the river. Victoria Falls is the undisputed adventure capital of Africa, so there is plenty here to keep one amused.
» Victoria Falls Accommodation

Lower Zambezi Valley
From the falls the Zambezi flows into the vast Lake Kariba, second largest man-made dam in the world. This is houseboat heaven, a great escape in a wonderful setting. From Kariba the Zambezi spreads out over the Lower Zambezi Valley, across fertile floodplains. Mana Pools (meaning "four pools" in the local Shona language) is a water wonderland between scattered islands and sandbanks fringed with indigenous forests, home to a vast array of birds and wildlife, including huge concentrations of hippo and crocodiles. This park is truly remote: best explored on foot or by canoe.

Great Zimbabwe Ruins
One of the most intriguing historical sites in Africa, Great Zimbabwe is a mysterious ruined city built in the 11th Century. Artifacts suggest that the city had a vast trading network stretching as far as China. The beautiful dry-stone walled enclosures are dramatic in this African backdrop. Scientists are still trying to piece together the story of why the city was abandoned in the 1500s.

WALKING SAFARIS: NOT FOR THE FAINT HEARTED

Get into the heart of the action, whether it’s observing a herd of elephants, tracking rhinos or watching dung beetles busily going about their business. This is what a walking safari is all about!

These days many people are opting for daily game walks to replace the traditional game drives and several lodges offer this as an option. There are even walks geared to children, a stroll around the camp gardens to learn about the smaller critters or a trip to a nearby watering hole.

For the more adventurous, try the 2-day Walking Safari. Spend the night under the stars on a special raised wooden platform before making your way back to base.

Or enjoy the best of both on a tailor-made 5-day Safari. Based at a luxury lodge or tented camp, take daily game walks and then spend one night out at a special sleep out location. Otherwise, you can opt to walk from camp to camp on a mobile walking safari. This way you cover fresh terrain and really get into the bushveld rhythm.

Specialist walking safaris can be arranged, for interests ranging from birds to trees or stargazing. Or speak to our consultants about the 13 day overland safari which includes hiking in diverse and spectacular locations within Swaziland, the Blyde River Canyon and Drakensberg.

A taste of South Africa Walking Safari options:

» Kruger: 4 days in exclusive unfenced tented camps

» Pafuri Walking Safari : 4-days exploring the last true wilderness areas in northern Kruger

» Rhino Walking Safari: Any combination of multi-day walks, specialist walks, game drives or sleep-outs can be arranged
