Dear

As 2009 continues apace, we begin to turn our attention to the end of the year … that well deserved break and a good dose of sunshine and adventure to feed the soul.

Island getaways are the ultimate retreat, to a world where the pace of life is a little slower, and relaxation is the most important item on the agenda. The Indian Ocean islands are an undiscovered paradise and Uyaphi is delighted to now offer some of these superb destinations as part of our travel repertoire.

A perfect accompaniment to the island escape is a dive adventure into unspoiled underwater wonderlands. This month we take a look at two of Africa’s lesser known dive spots whose remote locations promise uncrowded waters that will not disappoint, regardless of previous dive experience.

Happy reading!

Regards,
The Uyaphi.com Team

Castaway: African Island Escapes

It is no surprise that Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe is one of the most widely published books in history. Island life has occupied the daydreams of young and old since it was first released in 1719 ... and the remote locations of the Indian Ocean are the perfect antidote to this island fantasy. What better destination for a year-end escape?

Zanzibar
Even the name rings the romance of Africa’s spice island. Cloves and coconuts are still the major export; though increasing numbers of tourists are returning each year to soak in balmy blue waters, miles of coral sand and underwater wonderlands begging to be explored. Stone Town is an ancient sultanate, a mystifying maze of alleyways, colourful bazaars, tropical aromas and traditional dhows moored in the bay. The island, off the coast of Tanzania, is also the birthplace of Freddie Mercury!

Seychelles
A fantasy archipelago of over 100 islands lying 1,500 kilometres off the East Coast of Africa. Most of the islands are idyllic private paradise settings with impossibly turquoise waters washing some of the earth’s most beautiful settings. This is one unspoiled island paradise not to miss, particularly since the threat of sea-level rise could spell the end of most of these wondrous (but low lying) locations one day.

Mauritius
This fertile island offers every attraction for the perfect island getaway. Capital, Port Lois is the commercial hub and bustling port to this island community of just over 1 million inhabitants: a glorious mix of African, Indian, Chinese and European cultures. Apart from luxurious holiday resorts on breathtakingly beautiful beaches promising superb water sports, there are plenty of other distractions, from daytrips into the lush interior and duty free shopping, to an enchanting mix of cuisines to sample.

Underwater Wonderlands

The coastline of Africa offers a wealth of dive opportunities and there is no shortage of well-equipped operations to ensure that every diving holiday is one to remember. Let’s take a look at two spectacular dive locations off the usual tourist circuit.

Northern Mozambique
The huge expanse of Pemba Bay and the 27 islands of the Querimba Archipelago in northern Mozambique are an undiscovered jewel. Coral reefs boast a breathtaking array of hard and soft corals and shallow dives (up to 15 metres) will bring you into contact with resident seahorses and 140 species of sea shell, while beautiful reef fish dart amongst the anemones. This is an underwater photographer’s paradise!

Deeper you will find the largest giant fan coral in Africa. Vertical reef walls promise dramatic deep dives up to 40 metres; into the domain of reef sharks, sunfish, moray eels, 4 species of dolphin, barracuda and other pelagic game fish. Humpback whales are frequent visitors to these shores between August and October and, if you’re lucky, you’ll meet turtles making their way out to sea: leatherbacks, loggerheads and green turtles lay their eggs on the sandy shores of the Querimba islands.

Lake Malawi
Lake Malawi is one of the world’s most noteworthy freshwater dive locations. The lake reaches depths of 700 metres and is home to over 1,000 species of tropical fish, 350 of which are cyclids found nowhere else on earth. Dives are only down to 20 metres – there is not much life deeper than this and the closest decompression chamber is located in far off Johannesburg!

Diving the lake is like exploring a giant aquarium. Nearly three-quarters of the world’s freshwater aquarium fish come from Lake Malawi … you will encounter teeming clouds of rainbow coloured cyclids darting around dramatic lunar-like rock formations. Giant catfish hide between the rocks while huge freshwater crabs scurry along the bottom. If you are lucky you will be joined by a cormorant diving for fish, or a friendly otter coming to play. Diving the lake is not technically challenging, so it is perfect for first-time divers … and the array of tropical fish is well worth the effort.

Durban: Developments in the Leisure Capital

Durban is the ultimate tropical playground. The sea temperature rarely drops below 20°C and year-round warm weather ensures that life’s a beach!

Hotels, restaurants and beachside amusements stretch 4 kilometres along the historical Golden Mile. Recent addition to the scene, uShaka Marine World, boasts 15 hectares of prime beachfront property housing Africa's largest Marine Theme park. The saltwater aquarium is fifth largest in the world, meet Gambit and friends at the 1,200 seater dolphin stadium or try the adrenaline pumping water rides flowing through a giant shipwreck.

Durban is also a fascinating melting pot where east meets west; traditional home to the proud Zulu nation and one of the largest Indian populations outside India. The new King Shaka International Airport is due to be unveiled early next year and the city is well positioned to remain a top-class tourist destination. Durban is Africa’s busiest container shipping terminal and Durban International Convention Centre has won acclaim at the World Travel Awards for 6 consecutive years.

Also due to be unveiled next year is the new stadium, seating capacity: 70,000. The architecture is breathtaking – visitors can catch a cable car up the 106 metre high central arch to enjoy sweeping views over city and ocean. The stadium will host 5 first-round matches, a second-round match and a semi-final of the 2010 Football World Cup.

Durban Accommodation
Tropicana Hotel
Located at the heart of the Golden Mile a stones throw from the ocean, uShaka Marine World and the Convention Centre.

The Royal Hotel
5-star luxury and grace with panoramic views of the city and a choice of 3 upmarket cocktail venues and 6 restaurants under one roof.

Teremok Marine
Escape the hustle and bustle to this hideaway amongst the palms and giant milkwood trees just 1km from the ever-popular Umhlanga Rocks.
