Dear

Greetings from mid-winter in Africa … as I write this we are being blessed with glorious sunny weather, a welcome relief to the dramatic storms we’ve had recently.

However, nothing can dampen our enthusiasm. The country is still reeling from the excitement of the recent Lions Rugby Tour, not to mention a highly successful Confederations Cup that earned South Africa 7 out of 10 from FIFA for organisation and smooth running of the tournament. This bodes well for the 2010 World Cup which is now just under a year away!

Golf takes the sporting focus this month. Avid golfers will not be disappointed with the golfing scene in South Africa, from the wide open spaces and beautiful weather to the host of excellent golf courses to choose from.

This is a decidedly South African edition of the Uyaphi Newsletter. We take a peek at what's on offer in the North West province, from Sun City to the Madikwe, and then head south for South Africa's springtime spectacular, Flower Season.

Happy Reading!

Regards,
The Uyaphi.com Team

Plenty Afoot in South Africa’s North West

When Johannesburg city slickers head out for the weekend, they usually make for the playgrounds of the North West Province located en-route to the Botswana border. Not far from Johannesburg lies the Hartebeespoort Dam, a popular weekend water sport and adventure destination surrounded by the beautiful Magaliesberg Mountains.

The Taung Heritage site is set in an ancient limestone valley. Fresh pools surrounded by limestone cliffs and dramatic caves are the perfect setting for hikers, climbers and outdoor enthusiasts. The area is most famous for the discovery of the Taung child, an ancient skull providing significant clues to the origins of man. Hikers, canoeists and white water rafters will also enjoy the Vredefort Dome site, created by a massive meteorite that plunged to earth some 3,000 million years ago.

Sun City
The jewel in the crown of the North West is the Sun City Resort complex. Undoubtedly one of the architectural wonders of Africa is the opulent Palace of The Lost City Hotel, ringed with man-made lakes, forests and even a tropical beach with perfect surfing waves (electrically generated!). The adjoining Sun City Resort Complex is a luxury theme park for grown-up kids offering everything from casino glitz, to great shows or world-class golf. And right next door enjoy big 5 game experiences in the Pilansberg Game Reserve set in the crater of a long extinct volcano.

Madikwe
For a superb malaria-free Safari, head north to the 75,000-hectare Madikwe Game Reserve. Huge volcanic intrusions, Inselbergs, provide a dramatic backdrop for this reserve formed in 1991 as a unique collaboration between the State, the private sector and local communities. Madikwe offers game viewing in a wonderful setting, with an excellent mix of safari accommodation on offer, from family bush retreats to lavish 5-star luxury.

Golfing in Africa

South Africa has produced a stable of great golfers, multiple majors winners like Bobby Locke, Gary Player, Ernie Els and Retief Goosen.

South Africa’s superb weather and wide open spaces means that golfers are spoiled for choice when it comes to world-class golf courses in dramatic African settings, from fairways in the bush where zebra roam freely, to greens at the coast bathed in fresh ocean breezes. There are over 500 well-equipped golf courses on offer, most welcoming visitors and charging reasonable greens fees.

Speak to our consultants to recommend a perfect South African self-drive golfing holiday. Otherwise, here is our pick of the top 3 South African Golfing Safari experiences:

Zimbali Lodge and Country Club

Hans Merensky Golf Estate

Sample a selection of premium golf courses sure to entertain the most discerning player, together with fine dining and a host of other activities to take full advantage of the spectacular destinations you will travel through.

Flower Power, South Africa Style!

Springtime brings a miracle to the rugged Western and Northern Cape region. Wildflowers sprout out of the dusty earth after the winter rains, covering otherwise barren landscapes with magnificent carpets of flowers in the most virulent colours … yellows, oranges, pinks and reds.

Insiders will tell you that late August/September is the best time to visit the Cape; not only is it whale season, but this coincides with flower season – truly a sight to behold as an incredible 4,000 species of desert daisies spring into flower from Cape Town up to the far northern reaches.

The flower region is vast, so it is also advisable to stay in a few locations to explore each region for the best blooms. Be sure to consult the wild-flower hotline that advises visitors where they are most likely to see the finest displays, though locals in each district will know best.

Our pick of flower season accommodation:

Paternoster Cottages
Picturesque seaside cottages in a rustic west coast fishing village.

Bartholomeus Klip Farmhouse
A 10,000-acre fynbos nature reserve abuts this working wheat and sheep farm. Limited accommodation and superb dining is on offer on this large private estate with a spectacular mountain backdrop.

Bushmans Kloof
A privately owned wilderness reserve situated between the rugged foothills of the Cederberg Mountains and the plains of the Great Karoo. World renowned for its 130 rock art sites.

Naries Namakwaland Retreat
A romantic hideaway in the heart of the remote Namaqualand, diamond and copper region of the Northern Cape. The region also features unique semi-desert fauna and flora.
