| Only 30 minutes from Cape Town, the white gates of Palmiet Valley Estate await you. In this valley of wine and history, vineyards stretch out to the mountain, and behind a blaze of Jacaranda and Lavender are the gabled walls of a magnificent Cape Dutch homestead, now a luxurious guest house. Palmiet Valley Estate, which is situated on a working wine estate outside Paarl, center of the historic winelands area of the Cape is the perfect weekend escape for the city dweller and a spectacular base from which to explore South Africa's beautiful wine country. Guests stay in the beautifully restored farm homestead. Expect crisp cotton linen on Victorian sized beds, gleaming wood floors, original art, worn Persian rugs and chinky crystal glasses from which to enjoy any of the Estate's exceptional range of export wines. Decorated by the present owner, each suite is a tribute to a collector with a passion for rare finds. Every room is a treasure chest filled with novelty pieces such as an antique safe, a 1920's celebrity-owned travelling suitcase, or the antique copper kettle which makes up the tea and coffee service in the Honeymoon Suite. Despite these historic touches, every suite is luxuriously appointed to provide every comfort, from air conditioning to CD players to set the mood. All bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms ranging in style from Victorian to Turkish. Petal scattered linen, fragrant bathtime indulgences, fluffy white towels, oversized bathrobes, and heated mattresses for cold winter nights, are just a few of the special ways we like to make our guests feel pampered. Life at Palmiet Valley Estate enjoys a pace and rhythm all of its own and guests are usually left to their own devices. The smallest of pampering touches, thoughtful service, and the breathtakingly beautiful environment has resulted in a restful retreat that is nothing short of delightful. Afternoons are for long lazy walks, snoozing by the pool or a therapeutic rooftop massage beneath a bedouin tent. In cold weather, guests retreat to a comfy leather sofa in the thatched attic lounge where a selection of Estate wines, a roaring fire and interesting reading material provide just the right kind of atmosphere for a winter break. Evenings at Palmiet typically include watching the mountains turn pink as the sun sets - a glass of Chardonnay in hand - before joining the other guests in the candlelit 18th century dining room at tables set with fine china and silver. Alternatively, guests dine al fresco, with only the stars above in the African sky to accompany the delicious meal. Whatever your inclination, you will soon discover that it's not so much what you do at Palmiet, but how it's done. Dining at Palmiet Valley Estate is a sensory experience. Every meal is a production. The smell of roasting coffee and oven-baked bread will coax you out of bed in the morning to a spread of freshly picked fruit, yoghurts, delicious home-made jams and tables strewn with roses, hydrangeas and lavender. Our resident chef produces daily menus, often Cape Malay influenced, using fresh local ingredients from our herb garden and locally sourced game and fish. Guests dine together, and meals are accompanied by a selection of regional wines, and of course the excellent Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Chenin, Shiraz and Merlot wines produced by the Estate. Tastes may differ, we therefore cater for private dining or individual needs. |
