| In 1926 the Fowlds family began wool farming on Leeuwenbosch farm. In 1930 the building which is today Amakhala Shearers Lodge was erected as a dedicated sheep shearing shed. Sheep farming continued until 1996 when the farm was converted to a game reserve. Situated in the Greater Addo and Frontier Country area of the Eastern Cape in the Amakhala Game Reserve, a unique conservation initiative that allows animals to be re-introduced to the area where they once roamed freely. Both the Country House and Shearers' Lodge have been graded to four star standards. The old stables on Leeuwenbosch were converted into an intimate and quaint family chapel and together with the Country House and Shearers’ Lodge make an ideal wedding venue. AMAKHALA SHEARERS LODGE ROOM & SUITE TYPES: The old shed, in which close on a million merino sheep were shorn, has been beautifully converted into four luxury en-suite rooms, three twins and one really special honeymoon suite and surrounded by indigenous gardens. FACILITIES/ACTIVITIES: A range of morning and evening safaris on open Land Rovers and other activities enable our guests to experience the fascinating flora, fauna and bird life of the Eastern Cape.
